Spent a whole lot of time writing, both yesterday and today, but not fluf updates. I've been emailing back and forth with someone I met via the web, about the way the Lord is working and speaking. I spent hours (ham-fisted typist that I am) sharing some wonderful things with her. God is good.

Today I get to practice some more with CAT5 wiring. We're moving printers around in the office, and I have to make sure everything works. The superior office architects who wired the place initially decided that it was good to simply throw a 24-port switch up above the suspended ceiling so they could route the wires invisibly without havbing to worry about making everything look good. I guess. All I know is that I personally would not choose to make my network hardware accessible only via standing on a chair and pushing aside a ceiling panel. But that's just me. I'm funny that way.
More later if I get the chance...
Mike Barkman's stories have the coolest place names.

Some days, the only things that happen are things you just can't put in a public journal. But it was a good day.

Still waiting with bated breath for my expletive deleted Jornada to come home. They told me April 10th. I'm hoping. And hoping against hope that some kind soul at HP will decide it's not my fault, and not make me pay for a new screen. Man! That whole thing is just so incredibly stinko that I don't quite know what to do. I mean, whether I have to cough up the change for the repair or not, either way I'll have a pocket PC that I'm afraid to carry in my pocket. Or perhaps they'll still let me shell out for insurance, adding yet another not-negligible increment to my Jornada TCO. But as I've observed before, these things cost so much that I can't simply write it off as a bad idea and go looking for something else.

I've been following with cynical interest the developing flap over Microsoft's Passport terms of use, which directly affect MSN and MSN Messenger users, and may or may not affect Hotmail users, now or in the future, if Microsoft decides or does not to decide to exercise the rights to which they are or are not staking a legal claim at present. Convoluted, uncommunicative sentence? Convoluted issues. Apparently, as usual, the Borg is claiming it was merely misunderstood. The Borg is, after all, a gentle giant. Just ask anyone whose company ever appeared to be in a position to compete with them in any way. They would never take advantage of these silly legalese assertions of right; they just needed to use that kind of language because the world is a big scary place, and the Borg is also a very fragile giant. You understand.
I signed up for a Passport some time back, and now I'm wishing I hadn't. I use MS's Reader software, which also requires a Passport for its two allowable registrations (if your computer crashes after that you must go get yourself another Passport). But I'm thinking now that I'll never use it for any ebooks but free public-domain ones, and I'll never register it again. As with many Daynoter types, I want to learn enough about Linux (or whatever other reasonable alternatives may appear) to allow me to gradually disentangle my personal life from the Borg's sticky fingers. My professional life, of course, is another story. MS really does own most of the world at this point, though it's always possible that they may continue far enough along the path of being their own worst enemy, that somebody may eventually be able to unseat them. Or at least marginalize them a bit. May I live so long.
But I should reiterate again (that's redundant, right?) that for any service that you can get access to merely by supplying an email name — create a free dummy email account with completely fictional information, and then use the service. Nobody has the right to know more about you than you want them to, merely so that you can have access to a publicly-available free service.
Incidentally, I tried to use a freeware instant messaging client called Imici, which is supposed to gather into a single place all your various IM contacts from services like AIM, MSN, ICQ, and so on. I wish I could get it to work, because it's a neat idea. But it won't run on my system. Installs, fires up, crashes. But keep trying guys. Somebody's bound to get it right sooner or later. And if anybody wants to try Imici and let me know about their experience, I'd be interested to know.

GOTTA pick up my guitar tonight! Did I mention I picked up a $30 Cakewalk program that will let me record through my sound card? Got a reasonable handful of songs that need to be recorded. So I'll learn how to do little digital recording studio things. I did a little work with a friend who has a low-end professional setup on a big Mac. Heh! a Big Mac! Sorry! I swear that wasn't on purpose. You know what I mean. It's sold as a package, the Mac, two 15-inch flat panel monitors, an outboard mixer, Pro Tools software. Nice. I'll never have anything like that, though. Went for like $25K. My budget's way happier with thirty bucks and a PC. But I 'spect ta have some fun. I'll let you know.
