The Love of a Child...

Part I

The air was so cool where she was.

With every stirring of unseen breezes, a chain of Goosebumps arose on her flesh in delicate waves. A gentle breeze pulled loose a stray strand of silver hair. The pale glow of skylight caught the wisp of fine hair and glittered brightly in the blue rays of the Earth hanging high above. Silent breezes stirred the pale greenery of her gardens and created faint ripples across the mirror like surface of the garden pool. The breeze induced ripples clashed with the large ripples created by the tinkling waterfall. Even behind the protected glass of the balcony doors she heard it's sound clearly, she smiled. She had them designed that way specifically for that purpose. Often when the ageless Queen grew restless during sleep, she simply rose from her canopied bed and opened the doorway onto her private gardens ever so slightly and the sound of the falling water lulled her to sleep.

Tonight it seemed was no different. Once again the Queen of the Moon could not sleep, yet exhaustion plagued her like an unwanted guest. Something in the recesses of her heart had eaten away a large hole where there should be none. Selenity imagined it was simply boredom after her at first. So she threw herself into her kingdom and easing tensions between the Moon Kingdom and Earth's. Even going so far as to invite the Earth Royalty to her home, when their new son, Prince Endymion was old enough to travel. As it was now the boy was nearly two-no...nearly four years old and growing like a terran weed apparently.

Earth.

Selenity felt her gaze drawn irrevocably upward. The Earth, the blue and green planet that seemed so large in the Lunar Sky yet according to other Solar System Royalty it was rather small. So small yet so full of life, Selenity herself had only seen it twice in person. The heavier gravity had thrown her off at first, but when she first caught a glimpse of the Earth Oceans and saw an Earth sunrise she felt her heart fall irrevocably in love with the green planet. She sighed, for being so small it held so much life.

Selenity laughed, then again any planet was small when compared to Jupiter.

The sound of her own laughter echoed oddly on her ears, as it was met with no returning laughter. No responding chuckle or warmth of a smile. She was alone in this part of the palace, as her servants seemed insistent on giving her completely isolation so much of the time. That thought darkened her mood, and Selenity sighed once again. Her bright blue eyes falling on the staff sitting in an ornate stand next to her canopied bed. The shifting blue earth glow stretched the shadows created by her multifaceted windows sliding them across the room to her staff. A flicker of bright white light illuminated the darkness of her room before recessing itself back into hiding. Selenity remained unfazed by the sudden change in light. Her bright crescent birthmark on her forehead merely glittered in response to the flicker of light.

The Imperium Silver Crystal.

Symbol of not only the Moon Kingdom, but the power of the Selenity line itself. Stretching far back to the very first Selenity. Farther back then the current Selenity even dared think about, she was no stranger to concepts of immortality and time but such thoughts often reminded her of her own immortality and as such tugged at the hole in her heart. The quickly eroding ulcer that was growing into something more then symbolic.

A shift in Earthlight again caused the crystal to flicker once more, a breeze from the open balcony doorway carried with the tinkling of the waterfall in her gardens. Suddenly Selenity felt an irresistible urge to visit her private pool and turned to leave her large room.

As she nearly passed through the doorway a glitter out of the corner of her eye turned her gaze back to the Imperium Silver Crystal.

Selenity truly wanted to leave it behind, it was awkward and would seem out of place for what she was doing but...then again it was her charge and was bonded to her. So before she left her room to bathe in her private pools she removed her crystals and staff from the stand. The staff held surprisingly heavy in her hand. The dull light of the silver crystal seemed particularly bright to her blue eyes. She winced slightly, before turning away for her balcony for a private nighttime bath by Earth glow.

Part II

Her small delicate feet made faint brushes of sound as she quickened her pace for the pool, her gauzy night shift slipping from her shoulders. The silken fabric pooled around her like cloth woven water. One hand still clutched the staff bearing the Silver Crystal. Selenity turned away from the pool for a moment and set the crystal onto the ground onto of her fallen nightshift. Before turning back to her bath.

The delicate hairs on arms and transparent white hairs on her stomach rose once again in waves of Goosebumps that made her shiver. The tinkling of the waterfall seemed much louder directly next to it then it did from her room. Though it was not far away from her room the trip here seemed longer then usual. Her exhaustion catching up to her as the hole within her grew once more as she thought of her invitation to the Earth Royalty to visit the Moon Kingdom. Relations between the two kingdoms had been...strained none the less over the years. The past three decades alone was not paradise but they were far from terrible wars that Selenity heard tale of in the past.

Truthfully the Earth Kingdom had grown to forget the Moon Kingdom. Selenity even heard tales of it being spoken as a fairy story for children. Imagine, her kingdom; a fairy story!

That thought struck her amusing as she smiled, before slipping one slender foot into the water of the pool.

It was nearly icy cold.

Selenity shivered strongly, momentarily loosing her balance. She bit her lip, took a deep breath and entered the pool. Gentle slopes downwards too a pool that was waist deep for Selenity, was a perfect clear blue. Beneath her feet a tilted Mural of the Solar System circling the sun was laid beneath her feet. On each planet the glowing symbol of the planets power was set in the middle. Mars with its circle and pointed arrow, for masculinity and power. Jupiter with its arrow for the Archer as well as the moon and it's crescent. Shown particularly bright in this mural. A few pale moon lily pads as well as some fish darted beneath her legs. Selenity was tickled as their slippery body’s passed behind her knees. Coy fish they were called, from Earth. Imported here specifically for Selenity's use.

As Selenity cupped the clear water in her hands and began to gentle scrub her slender body, she felt a twinge in her heart that made her falter slightly. What was that?

She ignored this and continued on her way before halting again, the twinge glowing stronger. As Selenity pulled her long, long hair from it's two cone shaped odangos and let them fall around her in a curtain of glittering silver that appeared as woven strands of silk from pale moon glow. It fanned around her in the pool as she climbed the sloping titled mural of the pool to the tinkling waterfall.

Reaching her destination she allowed her self to be submerged beneath the cleansing waters of the waterfall. The twinge in her heart growing to painful mammoth proportions. As Selenity felt the first salty tears sting her eyes, she saw a bright glimmer off to the side of the pool as the Imperium Silver Crystal began to pulsate light like a heartbeat. The pain in her chest flared as powerful as a Jupiter lightning strike and tears were brought to Selenity's eyes. She clutched her chest and turned her eyes to the Earth in the sky. Praising silently for an answer to this pain. More tears sprung from her eyes as she realized the pain was not caused by physical distress. But Emotional Stress. Selenity was in pain, pain caused by a life time prospect of being alone. Alone in all her power, her glory her power. She had beautiful subjects and a wonderful kingdom to rule but in truth Selenity was a lonely monarch. In truth she had , no one. No one but herself.

As the pain in Selenity's chest grew stronger she saw the crystal rise from the end of her staff and float too her from beside the pool. It's slow, smooth trek like reminiscent of a firefly. As Selenity clutched her chest in pain she reached out for the crystal, feeling it's power awakening within her like a night flower uncurling by Earth's light. As her fingertips brushed the cool surface of the crystal Selenity felt her mind slip, as bright whiteness filled her vision.

Part III

She wasn't in her private pool.

In fact Selenity was unsure where she was. She failed to recognize the golden stone work and marble fixtures and pillars of the palace around her. In the distance the tinkling sing song voice of something tugged at her memory and tears filled her eyes fresh anew. She knew that sound.

"Birds." She thought, "Those are birds singing! We have no birds on the moon..no animals at all but..."

A flutter of wing beats arising in a swirl of white arose from somewhere beside her and Selenity felt her heart start with surprise. She stepped backwards, eyeing the flock of doves as they fluttered into the bright blue cloudless sky. The sun shinning like a golden coin in the sky, Selenity brushed away her salty tears. She had forgotten how beautiful Earth was.

All around her, lush greenery was abundance. The verdancy of the planet in combination of the heavy gravity overwhelmed her for a second as the sun grew too bright for her night adjusted eyes. Selenity turned her eyes away from the sky to see a stark cap of ebony hair hiding a small, handsome child’s face. Startling blue eyes, glittered as the young boys face was flushed with activity. He smiled at her, mischievously. Selenity felt herself smile despite her confusion.

"Can you tell me where I am little one?" She asked softly.

The little boy only laughed before running at her with his arms open wide. Selenity smiled and crouched down to greet him, her arms open wide as the little boy ran past her. Confused Selenity turned around to see him launch into the arms of a hauntingly beautiful woman with long, black hair and a silky purple dress. The little boy snuggled into her arms as she kissed him tenderly on the head.

Turning away from Selenity the two moved to a stone bench near where they stood. The woman sat down with the child in her arms and smiled at him, brushing stray strands of dark hair from his face. He grinned before taking a strand of her ebon locks and running it through his chubby fingers. Lying his head on her chest an expression of...utter calm. Perfectly safe, perfectly comfortable and complete trust seared in Selenity's gaze as she felt it struck her to the core.

(Oh...the love of a child for it's parents. So pure, so trusting, so uncorrupted. What it must be like to have someone like that live only for you.) She thought acheingly.

The love of a child...

Selenity whipped her silvery head around at the voice but saw no one. Nothing but the woman and her child, as she held him in her arms. Rocking him back and forth and singing softly to him. Selenity bit her lip as the tears started a new. Oh the love of a child...

"Mama?" The little boy asked. Selenity was taken back, so far only she had spoken. The little boy’s voice was gentle and kind, angelic in its utter sweetness. Selenity smiled broadly at him, before his Mother responded.

"Yes Endymion?" She answered softly.

(Endymion?)

Selenity's heart fell in her chest. Endymion? As in the new prince of the Earth, Endymion?

(Of Course.) She thought. (It all makes sense. No wonder this world is so familiar and beautiful to me. It's Earth. So that must mean I'm sitting in on a conversation between Endymion and his Mother Terrana.)

"I...someone told me there was a fairy kingdom on the moon. Lead by a Queen named Serenity. Is that true?" He asked looking up at his mother.

"No really Mama is there?" He asked.

She sighed, "Yes my son there is. Here name is Selenity, not Serenity and it's not a fairy kingdom. It's a kingdom just like ours. She lives in a lunar kingdom with beautiful people with crescent moon shapes on their foreheads." She said tracing the shape on his forehead. "She rules with a magic crystal all on her own. In a kingdom where Earth, our home hangs in the sky instead of the moon in our own. " Terrana stated, pointing one slender arm to the sky behind Selenity. Selenity turned to see the moon rising in the east, pale and Grey and large in the sky. An odd feeling swirled in her stomach as she saw her home. A terrible longing rose within her. Where was she exactly? She knew this was like a dream yet it was not, it bore none of the unfamiliar traces of a dream only the stark reality of a vision. Like Selenity was there yet she was not, for she new she was an intruder in this place spying yet not really intruding. Simply listening to a conversation that seemed available for all to hear. Or...perhaps only her ears were meant to hear. She stared at the moon, wondering was she still up there? Stuck under the waterfall in her garden stuck in a trance? Was she here in spirit? Had she died? No..she couldn’t have died. She couldn't die, she was immortal. Then she must be seeing a vision, but the question was, was it a vision of the future? Or was this the past she was watching. Or maybe...maybe it was the present. As she stared at her home pondering, Endymion's voice broke her thoughts.

"She lives up there all alone?" Endymion asked following the line of his Mother's arm.

"Yes my son. All alone in a beautiful castle of white stone." Terrana answered.

"Doesn't she have any children? Or a husband or something?" Endymion asked, the uncontainable curiosity of a young child never daunted.

"No, dear she has no one but her crystal and her kingdom. She's all alone." The Earth Queen said softly, a hint of sadness on her voice that struck Selenity cold. This woman pitied her and truthfully Selenity did not find the emotion unwanted. It seemed the Earth Queen recognized the longing in a single woman’s heart.

"But...but that's not fair. She's gotta be lonely Momma, we have to find her a friend. Let's give her a puppy! Mama can we send her a puppy?" Endymion asked brightly.

Terrana laughed, "My dear child I don't think her lunar cat guardians would enjoy that too much."

Selenity laughed too, imagining the look on Artemis and Luna's face if she brought home a puppy to keep her company.

"But...I feel sorry for her. I wish she had someone to keep her company, maybe a little kid like me to keep her company like I do you Mama when Papa is away." Endymion said quietly returning to playing with his Mother's hair.

Selenity felt the words of this child move her, and she clutched her chest and fell to her knees in tears. Why was the Imperium silver crystal doing this to her? Why must she stand by and listen to this conversation that brought her so much pain? What was the crystal trying to make her realize? That she was lonely? That she needed companion ship? She knew as much without this vision. The Queen realized she was lonely and longed for someone to keep her company. She knew as much before she even realized she knew. Selenity was alone and needed company and giving her this vision this spying vision wasn't helping..

Endymion's voice broke her silent tears as she heard the child squeal with delight, "Look Mama a shooting star!"

"Ooh, make a wish Endymion." Terrana said

"You make a wish too, Mama! Let's wish...hmm..." he scrunched up his face for a moment in mock concentration. Selenity heard Terrana laugh softly, "I know. Let's wish Selenity wasn't so lonely anymore OK?"

"Ok." Terrana answered as the two closed their eyes.

Selenity felt her vision go a bright white on the edges as she felt herself being drawn backwards. Bright light surrounded her as she was drawn out of her vision.

Part IV

Selenity felt herself lurch forward as she came back from her vision and returned to her Earth glow bath in her private pool. As the chilled water struck her bare skin and she registered where she was she snapped awake. Slipping down the sloping tile bottom of the pool as the Imperium Crystal Floated backward away from her. Selenity fell out of the waterfall and was struck with the cool night air around her.

She paused for a moment, staring amazed at the crystal before her as her mind registered all that she had just experienced. As the pain her chest returned Selenity felt tears of anger return anew on her face.

"Why did you show me that?" She demanded of the crystal, which only pulsated with light. Selenity felt her heart fill with an emotion, a foreign one that she automatically identified as the crystals.

"Because you thought I needed to see that? Is that it? You thought I need to realize that which I already knew?" She asked hotly of the crystal which only pulsated dully before filling her with another emotion. Regret and Sorrow.

Selenity bit back a sob as she slid further into the pool, falling onto her knees as the water rose to just above her breasts. The crystal lowered down the waters level and drew nearer to her. "I know this." She said weakly. " I realize my loneliness. You know that-I know I watched Terranna and Endymion with envy. Envy of the closeness of their relationship. Envy at how as long as her son lived Terranna would never know sorrow or loneliness like I did. All because of the love of her child."

The Love of a child...

"I wish..."Selenity said quietly, turning her head to the sky and the Earth. Bright above her. " I wish...I wish I had a child of my own. Like Endymion, a child that I could pour my loneliness onto and turn it into love. A child that would fill the void of my heart and give me companionship that I long for. I wish...I wish I had a child." She sobbing softly, " A child all my own."

The pulsating light of the Imperium Silver Crystal flickered once, as Selenity saw her tears fall freely into the pond beneath her. The reflection of the Earth high above her flicked a bright gold for a moment. A golden puslebeat of light that reflected off the Imperium Silver Crystal as it pulsated a bright silvery white light that struck out from the crystal in a beam of white blue light that crashed through the water to Selenity's stomach. As she was filled with the power of the crystal, Selenity felt her self glow brightly for a moment. Her hair rising with the power of the crystal in a swirling fan of silvery hair. As the silvery power of the crystal filled her she felt a small spark of power, a foreign golden spark that mingled with her white. For once moment Selenity was filled a confusing aura of power that left her breathless. Then it released her and her hair fell with a splash to the water around her. The coy, who had drifted over to during her sobbing darted away with the shock of her hair falling into the water.

As Selenity sat there, confused at what happened she felt a pulse beat within her as a new presence joined the presence of the crystal she always felt. A bright innocent spark that strongly reminded her of Endymion's prescence, in her vision. As she felt the power of this new spark of light speak to her from within. She smiled, and gently touched her stomach with one hand and reached out with for the crystal and cupped in the other. Bringing the crystal to her face as she brushed it against her cheek affectionately.

"Thank you..." She whispered, in tears. "Thank you for this. Thank you for my...child."

She looked at her stomach, and said "Welcome, Serenity."

>Epilogue

Endymion struggled with the tight collar of his heavily starched uniform. He ran a hand through his dark ebony locks before sighing deeply with boredom. His mind instantly returning to the one incident that had been going through his mind over and over and over again since...it happened.

He could still smell the fresh flowers, hear the flutter of the doves and smell the sweet smell of his Mother as he sat in her lap and spoke of the moon kingdom and it's queen. The wishing on a star for and end to her loneliness. As Endymion sat there in his Mother's lap, without knowing it would be the last time he ever spent any time with his Mother he felt a tugging at his chest before it dissipated as quickly as it came. He stared at the sky and watched the moon glow, as it rose.

That was the last time Endymion spent anytime with any of his parents. Now that they were gone, as a result of incidents that he cared never to think of again. The young boy was crowned less then a week after their memorials were erected. Prince Endy-no...KING Endymion was now being whisked by his Father's council from lesson to lesson. Practice hall to practice hall to learn the ways of War and politics.

But he was still a little boy, and Endymion longed to play innocently as he did not so long ago. But because of his sudden arrival to king hood, and the deep, deep mourning of the planet Endymion was to stand before planet as symbol of strength. To show that this mourning would pass, as it did for everyone.

Endymion did not think it would.

Endymion once again, pulled at the tight white collar of his practice uniform. All around him the loud clanging of the silver fencing foils rang in his ears. He brushed a careless lock of black hair from his eyes as he watched his personal guard of young men practice.

"Your highness, would you like to begin your lesson?" A voice whispered softly in his ear.

He sighed loudly, (No.) he thought, (I'd rather run to my room and spend sometime by myself truthfully.) "Yes." he answered "I'm ready."

;Grabbing his heavy protective helmet, Endymion trudged slowly behind his fencing tutor. All around him the clanging of young men practicing filled his ears, along with their mindless banter. Except one conversation that struck his ear hard and he listened with a thundering heartbeat.

"Didn't you hear about it?" One young man asked.

"No, I didn't. What was it about?" Another asked paring a blow at him.

"Queen Selenity of the moon kingdom had a child, a little girl I think she named Serenity. Looks just like her Mom they said." The first young man stated breathlessly.

"Oh? Well that's good for them I guess. At least they have something to celebrate about." The Latter young man said. "Will she still come and visit like she promised before the King and Queen died? Poor Endymion will have to face her all on his own."

"Nah I don't think so...our gravity here is different for them. It's heavier I guess and it doesn't react well with them, they'll probably invite him up there some summer season or something." The first said.

"Yeah that'd be good for him. Endymion needs it that's for sure." The latter said.

"Endymion! Are you ready?" His instructor demanded from up ahead.

Endymion glanced at the young men who halted at the sudden interruption in their conversation and glanced behind them. The looming figures of his Father's council staring hard at him, scrutinizing.

Endymion growled then sighed once again as he turned to his instructor. "Yes." He answered putting on his helmet. "I'm ready."
