This is a box where the wood definitely speaks for itself in dramatic fashion. The lid is a piece of highly figured black walnut, with touches of spalting starting in a few places. The box is made from Claro (Californian) walnut with contrasting reinforcing splines made from madrone. One of my larger pieces, it measures almost 4" high, 14" long and 8 1/2" deep.
The floating bottom is made from black walnut, and is a classic example of bookmatching (sawing one piece of wood laterally into two mirror-image pieces and rejoining them). The brass hinges contrast nicely between the Claro box and the figuring of the lid.
