History

Like all the forts on the islands this fort was built in 1780 by general F.C. Cooper. It was named after Prince William of England. The fort is built on the rocks at the south-west side of Maoco Island, and has an amazing vieuw over the island and the ocean.

Because of its position on top of rocky mountains, this is the best protected fort and has spectacular views. Dispite this Fort Williamsquare has mostly been used to house army compagnies and state prisoners.

Since 2003 it is used as the homefront of the Development Department.

Sights

Fort Williamsquare is hard to reach. It takes a strong jeep to climb the steep rocky road to the entrance on top of the mountain. The only road is on the south side, and it is close to impossible to travel this path by horse. By foot it will take you at least 45 minutes. This is exactly the reason why this fort was never used as an important military camp, or transformed into a palace. The situating is unique but almost impossible.

However there is another, secret path on the north side, along the shore. It is very narrow, and only accessible by foot. This path was never used much because not many people knew about it, and it will take you about 1 hour to reach the top, starting from White Beach. Local people will tell you where the foot-path begins.

The third and also secret way to enter the fort is by boat. Only experienced sailors can steer clear of the rocks, and find the secret watergate. If you can find the right sailor this is an opportunity you cannot pass. Inside the mountain there is a canal that leads past dungeons and cellars. You will also see what is left of an underground brothelhouse. At the end of the canal you can take the 214 steps up to the ground floor of the fort.

Ever since the Development Department was located at the Fort, they have started paving the main road. It is expected that by the end of 2005 the Fort will be easily reachable by jeep. However, we recomment you take the adventurous foot-path from the north because of its breathtaking view over the sea and the other islands nearby.
