Are Man Utd buying a striker or not?

Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed the transfer window could cause problems in United’s quest to sign another striker.

It had been rumoured that Ferguson was interested in bringing another forward to Old Trafford when the transfer window opens on January 1.

But persuading Europe's top bosses to part with their prized assets will prove to be a difficult task. He said: "Nobody wants to sell the players we want". 

"I know what January is like," Sir Alex said. "You think you are going to go for a striker and then find out he is cup-tied in Europe and that has always been there.

"January has always been that problem for us. It hasn't changed unless you wanted just to bring a striker in who was going to do you in the league.

"To be honest I have never even thought where I might look in that respect and who would be available.

"It is always difficult. They think it's easy but the sort of players we want are the sort nobody wants to sell," added the United boss.

Shevchenko, who has constantly been linked with United in the tabloid press, played for AC Milan against Lens on Tuesday night – and Ferguson has indicated he would prefer to sign a player who is eligible for Champions League football.

"Nicky Butt is going to have an operation on Tuesday morning which is unfortunate for us. We tried to let his injury settle down but it's not settled. We sent him for for a scan yesterday afternoon and the result is he's going to have to have an operation. That's our seventh operation this season, it's a lot."
