Orillian says he wasn't racing
Driver who cut person in half on trial
Posted By THE CANADIAN PRESS
Posted 23 hours ago
An accused man told court Friday that he wasn't street racing when his car cut a 21-year-old Hamilton pedestrian in half.
Andre Telesford, 29, of Orillia, contradicted the evidence of more than a dozen witnesses who have told court dodge ram replacement dash his white Dodge Neon and another unidentified car -- possibly a dark green Honda Prelude -- were chasing each other in cross-town traffic at highway speeds.
Just dodge front hub bearing after acadiana dodge midnight on Nov. 5, 2006, the Neon struck Matthew Power as he and a friend were crossing the street.
The impact tore the victim's body in half and sent it flying more than 60 metres.
Telesford told Superior Court Justice David Crane he was halfway through the intersection when he saw the victim's friend, Christopher Van Amerongen, crossing the street.
He said he swerved into the north curb lane to avoid hitting him when a second person he hadn't seen darted in front of his car.
"I seen someone crossing the street. I hit the brakes and geared down," Telesford said. "(Van Amerongen) stopped and just looked at me ... then someone ran out in front of me."
Assistant Crown attorney Kevin McKenna suggested to Telesford that his story was implausible, given that Power and Van Amerongen were walking together and both would have been in clear view.
The prosecutor said Telesford's claim that he tried to brake and gear down flew in the face of both physical evidence and the testimony of other witnesses.
McKenna noted dodge sprinter van there were no skid marks on the pavement.
Other drivers and their passengers said they saw the white Neon and other vehicle travelling at "tremendous speed" as they tore bumper-to- bumper through the intersection.
One witness, Bradley Pitts, a self-described "car freak," said the cars flew past his GMC Jimmy a block dodge van 4wd and a dodge plan room half east of the intersection going about 120 kilometres per hour.
He said they kept accelerating and by the time they entered the intersection, he estimated their speed to be 150 km/h to 160 km/h.

Telesford said he was "moving dodge apparel with the flow of traffic" when he first heard the other vehicle with a rumbling exhaust system approach from behind. He said the driver was revving his engine loudly and dodge ram quad cab sport tailgating him.
The accused man said he
tried to break away from the car by accelerating to pass a woman in a Ford Focus in dodge ram truck accessories front of him. The lights turned green just as he reached the intersection, he said.
In earlier testimony, defence lawyer Cheryl Robb suggested to Det.-Const. Robert Blankstein that her client was swerving into the curb lane to avoid hitting Van Amerongen when his car struck Power.
"I would disagree," Blankstein dodge ram cab lights said.
"I don't believe he had any opportunity to perceive and react to the situation in front of him."
Telesford said his airbag deployed on impact with the man's body and he was unable to see anything.
"Were you racing the other car?" Robb asked her client.
"No," Telesford replied. The trial continues Tuesday with closing arguments.
