Shifu Yang Xiao Dong began studying at age 6 under the instruction of his uncle. He learned Northern Shaolin and three-section staff.
During high school shifu Yang Xiao Dong studied Tang Lang Quan (Praying Mantis Boxing) under shifu Wang Su Jin. He then moved to Taipei and became a student of shifu Su Yu Zhang, who taugh shifu Yang Xiao Dong several tang lang quan styles. Finally, shifu Su Yu Zhang introduced shifu Yang Xiao Dong to his own master, shifu Liu Yun Qiao.
For two years, shifu Yang Xiao Dong studied under both teachers and then became solely a student of shifu Liu Yun Qiao. During this time he practiced Tai Ji Quan, Ba Ji Quan, Tang Lang Quan and various weapons. Shifu Yang Xiao Dong also received personal instruction from shifu Liu Yun Qiao in Ba Gua Zhang, Pi Gua and Mi Zong.
Being 24 years old, shifu Yang Xiao Dong was allowed by shifu Liu Yun Qiao to teach martial arts, a high compliment indeed. He was soon instructing at five colleges, teaching classes in Tai Ji Quan and Tang Lang Quan. During this time of intense dedication and training, he also taught Tai Ji Quan and sword to elderly students at a mountain temple. Before moving to the USA, shifu Yang Xiao Dong taught the Chinese Acrobats of Taiwan for four years.
In May 1980, shifu Yang Xiao Dong moved to the USA and settled in Canton, Ohio. Shifu Yang Xiao Dong continues to teach and promote martial arts at various locations in Northeast Ohio.
