Shifu John Hum began his kung fu training at the age of 8 in Montreal's Chinatown due to the insistance of his grandfather who was a very well known Hong Jia stylist. Through the years, he has practiced Shotokan karate, Kajukenpo, Judo and Tae Kwon Do.
It wasn't until his travels to Taiwan to further his academic and martial arts education that he met shifu Su Yu Zhang and shifu Liu Yun Qiao. During the 1970's, martial arts in Taiwan were at its zenith due to the fact that many of the most famous masters were still living and teaching at the time. Shifu John Hum studied Tang Lang Quan, Ba Ji Quan, Pi Gua Quan and Tai Ji Quan under shifu Su Yu Chang and he even had the chance of training several times with shifu Liu Yun Qiao.
Shifu John Hum currently teaches at Algonquin College and Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He has senior students teaching gong-fu in Montreal (Canada) and Albuquerque, New Mexico (USA).
