Vaccine Presentation
Objective Given access to the CPH network and a background in the use of laptop computers, students will be able to create a PowerPoint presentation, save their work on the CPH network, and present the information about an infectious disease to their classmates.
Standards Investigation and Experimentation 1.1 - Select and use appropriate tools and technology to perform tests, collect data, analyze relationships, and display data.

Physiology 11.8 - Compare and contrast bacteria and viruses, their growth requirements, and effective treatments for illnesses by both.

Physiology 11.9 - Apply knowledge of the immune system, including knowledge of bacterial and viral diseases, the role of the skin, the role of antibodies, and the role of vaccination.
Assignment
You are going to collect information concerning an infectious disease that most people are currently vaccinated against. After your group has completed the assignment, you are going to present your information to the class in the form of a PowerPoint presentation.
Diseases Diphtheria

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis B
Pertussis

Polio

Rubella
Influenza

Measles

Mumps
Smallpox

Tetanus

Varicella
Specifics
The presentation of your disease of interest (DOI) must include each of the following characteristics:
1.   Summarize the function of a vaccine and how it provides protection
      against your DOI.

2.   What does it mean to be vaccinated against a disease?

3.   Differentiate between an antibody and an antibiotic.

4.   Discuss how your immune system protects you from disease through
      the use of antibodies.

5.   Examine the structure and function of an antibody. Include an image
      to support your response.

6.   What type of microorganism causes your DOI? Include an image to
      support your response.

7.   Outline how your DOI is transmitted.

8.   Illustrate and explain the symptoms of infection of your DOI.

9.   As the infection progresses, how does your DOI present itself
physically in the patient? Include an image to support your response.

10.   Is it possible for an infection of your DOI to be fatal?

11.  Describe the treatments for an individual infected with your DOI.

12.  When did the vaccine for your DOI become available to the public?

13.  Prior to the vaccine, how many infections of your DOI occurred per year?

14.  Do infections continue to occur anywhere in the world despite the
presence of a vaccine? Why does this occur?

15.  Cite all of your Web sources by their address or URL.

Guidelines 1.  Introduce group members.

2.  Identify disease of interest.

3.  Each group member presents.

4.  Presentation lasts no more than 7 minutes.

5.  Use good judgement when including images.
