Soi is one of those few strong women in anime. She kicked Tamahome's butt, and she could have easily killed Miaka. And the fact that she didn't proves that despite her harsh outer cover, she is nice and soft inside. (Like Creamwich!)
Yet, she is no softy! She is brave, strong, sensitive, and a lot of other good things. She also was the only one who could ever really look into Nakago's heart, which is a tough thing to do.
She therefore deserves more than "some" credit.
She was also a true friend, and deep lover. She lived and died only for Nakago, who loved her, but could never have shown it (being the dippy, dim, dumb, dope of a male specimen of the human species that he is!!).
