Welcome to The Historic Butler-Bloomingdale Cemetery

Manning Avenue. Butler, New Jersey

The cemetery was established in the mid 18th century and is located off of Manning Avenue, one block up a small hill from its intersection with Upper Main Street. From the grounds, one can see most of the Butler Business district as well as the spires of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church and Butler Methodist Church.

After 20 years of neglect and vandalism, The Old Butler Cemetery created concern among certain individuals who have connections to the Butler, NJ area. This site was established in late 2001 with the intention of archiving and recording information regarding this once grandiose cemetery. For three years, a small group of us held the flickering flame of care while archiving tombstone records and conducting basic geneological research. Unfortunately, none of us had enough time or financial backing to physically care for the graveyard. We could only watch from afar as the cemetery succumbed to more weathering and vandalism.

However, I am happy to report that someone who is knowledgeable in local history and geneology has taken the reigns and is now forming a group entitled "Friends of the Old Butler Cemetery". The purpose of the group is to maintain geneological records of all who are interred in the graveyard, as well as physical restoration and maintenance of the tombstones and grounds. The Friends Group will also have their own website. Watch here for the link when it finally come online.

Will this site go away? Definitely not! Though the site will still contain the present information on the Old Butler Cemetery as it has always done, the focus will change somewhat to include other cemeteries in the area as well as some eclectic information on the Triboro region. tay tuned.
