| Chapter 1 "Home.", I thought as I turned the U-haul truck onto the gravel driveway. It wasnt a big house, but then again, it was all the space needed for one person. One - such a lonely number. It had taken me a long time to get use to being all alone again, but somehow, by the grace of God, I had managed to come to terms with it; with it and everything else that had happened. But thats another story Ill save for later. It had been a long drive from New York to Cameron, NC I was worn out. I climbed out of the truck and opened the front door. I glanced around the empty house, then back out at the truck. It was getting dark and I was dreading unloading that huge truck all by myself. Thats what I get for not thinking about the move. I hadnt thought about having to unload everything that I owned by myself. All that I had thought about was getting myself far away from New York and the life I so desperately wanted to leave behind. Starting over with a new life where noone knew me was all I wanted. I decided to wait until the next day to unload. I grabbed my purse, my gym bag and the cooler and made my way inside. I was so completely exhausted that I laid down in the floor and fell fast asleep. As dawn broke, the bright morning sun blared into my sleepy eyes - the downfall of not having curtains. I sat up and tried to stretch out my stiffened body. Sleeping on the floor had taken its toll, but at the same time, the rest had done me a world of good. I grabbed my gym bag and headed to the shower. Rats, no shower curtain. Luckily, I had anticipated not wanting to unpack, and had packed a towel, soap and shampoo in my gym bag. I took a shower which refreshed me tremendously. I never realized how much a shower curtain kept the water in the tub. I laughed slightly as I saw the water that had covered the bathroom floor. "Oh well, Ill just clean it up.", I said to myself - who else was I going to talk to. I got dressed and threw a baseball cap on my head. Then I started the awful task of unloading. First I got my car off of the trailer and parked in the small garage. Then I opened the back of the truck. How all of that stuff was in our apartment, I havent a clue. "Well, its not going to unload itself.", I thought. I grabbed the first box and carried it inside. An hour later, I was standing in the truck trying to decide what to grab next. "Hello?", a womans voice called causing me to jump. I stuck my head around the wall of the truck. "Oh, hello.", the young woman said startled to see me there. "Hi.", I answered. She was a some what tall woman with long dark hair. She was pretty. She balanced a huge plate in one hand and extended her other one to shake mine, "Im Michelle Hardy. I live in the next house down." "Nice to meet you, Im Jade.", I said shyly. "I just thought you guys might be hungry so I brought you some breakfast.", she said handing me the plate. "You really didnt have to do that. But thanks.", I said gratefully as I watched the woman scanning the area for someone else. "Who are you looking for?", I asked awkwardly. "Wheres your husband?", she asked innocently. "Dont have one. Its just me.", I replied as took a seat on the truck and began to devour the food. She seemed a little surprised. She was just about to say something when a silver mustang pulled up in front of the house and the horn honked. The young woman smiled, "Well, thats my husband. We have to go into town before he leaves. Enjoy the food and Ill see you later." She ran slightly towards the car. "It was nice to meet you! Thanks again!", I yelled. She smiled and waved as she jumped into the car and it sped away. "At least I know I have nice neighbors.", I thought to myself. That never would have happened back home. But this was home now. It just wasnt registering yet. Next Chapter ..*.. Chapter Index ..*.. Home |
