Logan Killicks
Logan Killicks has a sixty acre farm. "Some folks never was meant to be loved and he's one of them" (p. 24). Janie can not love Logan. "She knew now that marraige did not make love. Janie's first dream was dead, so she became a woman" (p. 25).
Joe Starks
Joe becomes the Mayor of the city, and gets to be very rich. Janie can afford anything she wants, but she must keep her mouth shut in public. "She sho don't talk much. De way he rears and pitches in de store sometimes when she make uh mistake is sort of ungodly, but she don't seem to mind at all. Reckon dey understand one 'nother" (p. 50). It seems that Janie doesn't mind Joe's shutting her up to other people. However, the anger builds up inside of her.At Joe's funeral, Janie is secretly rejoicing behind her black veil. "Weeping and wailing outside. Inside the expensive black folds were resurrection and life" (p. 88). Janie had realized that Joe did not bring her any more happiness than Logan.
Tea Cake
Tea Cake is the love of Janie's life. When they first meet, Tea Cake buys some tobacco from Janie's store. They immediately begin to get to know each other. Little by little, Tea Cake spends more and more time with Janie, teaching her how to play checkers, fish, and shoot the gun.Soon, Janie begins to fall for Tea Cake. "He could be a bee to a blossom" (p. 106). Janie starts to feel young for the first time after meeting Tea Cake. After awhile, they move to the Everglades. During a hurricane, Tea Cake is bitten by a rabid dog while saving Janie's life. Janie is forced to shoot Tea Cake with a gun when Tea Cake goes crazy from his rabies.
