Modem

The Modem is used to connect the computer to the Internet through a phone line. The reason you need a modem is that the Telephone system is analogue and the computer only understands digital. So when you send an E-Mail the computer converts the message to analogue which is converted back again by the receiving computer. The name modem comes from Modulate Demodulate which is what the Modem does when it converts Digital to Analogue and visa versa.

Today with Broadband the modem sends the information at a different wavelength to a normal telephone call thus allowing the user to have more Bandwidth being able to make a Telephone call whilst surfing the Internet.

Think of Bandwidth as a pipe, the more width you have the more you can send along it. Broadband achieves this by sending the information at different frequencies transmitting more information along the phone line and effectively widening the pipe.

There are two types of modem, internal and external. External drives plug into the USB port and internal slot into a PCI slot on the motherboard.

To connect the Modem you have to open up the computer case and find a spare PCI slot on the Motherboard. Remove the blank backing plate in the modem making sure that the slots line up correctly then apply gentle pressure until connected, once inserted screw the backing plate to the case to complete the work.
