You know, I could get used to this. In the past two weeks, I have gone to three receptions: one in Luxembourg for the Luxembourg Fulbright Alumni Assoc, one in Duffel for the Flanders Fulbright Alumni Assoc and one in Brussels for the American Club of Brussels at the opening of the Herbert Hoover Exhibit at the Military Museum. Each of these receptions included never-ending glasses of champagne (the waiters would appear out of no-where to fill your glass) and a great variety of hors d'oeuvres, all looking as if they came out of a gourmet food magazine. The last reception also included a speech given by the US Ambassador. This receptions entail standing around discussing a variety of things with a variety of people. Okay, we Fulbrighters usually stick together and discuss what bureaucratic loophole we made it through that week. This week's big news was that Wendy was able to register as a student, after only a month. Anyways, you stand there drinking your never ending glass of champagne, discussing successes and failures of the week, and then you hear "madame", you turn and there is a waiter/waitress holding a tray of hors d'oeuvres. This goes on for somewhere between 1 and 2 hours. You can, of course, tell who the Fulbrighters are because we are the only people in the room who do not let a food tray pass without partaking in its goods. I could definitely get used to this.
So that's one side of my life here. The other part consists of neverending supplies of sandwiches, pasta and soup. On occassion, I partake in fries or pizza. I drink water and sometimes I get a Coca Light from the vending machine. I recently bought ice tea, which has been an excellent addition to my pathetic pantry supply.
In other news, tomorrow I am taking my first non-fulbright excursion. I am, of course, going with other grantees but we're paying for it not Fulbright. Although, I guess they are indirectly paying for it. *shrug* I am going to an Oktoberfest type celebration in Diksmuide, which I guess is by the coast in Flanders. So look next Monday/Tuesday for pictures and a description of this fun-filled voyage of oom-paa music and beer.
