1 48-ounce bottle cranberry juice (6 cups)
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 cups water
3 1-inch-long strips lemon peel
3 inches stick cinnamon
1 teaspoon whole cloves
1/3 cup bourbon, rum, or orange juice
1. Combine cranberry juice, sugar, lemon juice, and water in a 4-quart saucepan or Dutch oven.
2. For spice bag, tie lemon peel, cinnamon, and cloves in a 6-inch square of 100 percent cotton cheesecloth. Add spice bag to saucepan. Bring just to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 10 minutes. Discard spice bag. Add bourbon, rum, or orange juice.
3. Transfer to a heatproof serving carafe or pot. Serve with a lemon peel strip in each cup, if desired. Makes about 12 (6-ounce) servings.

EMILY SAYS: Highly tasty. I love spiced cider, Glühwein, glögg, and stuff like this. And I love plain cranberry juice. This combination was just lovely. The only complaint I have is that almost everything this yumquest was hot, as was the apartment. I'd say this might be something to try again sometime this winter when it's cold. Definitely a success, though.
LYNDA SAYS: *craves more!* Cranberry and orange form an irresistable flavor combination for me, and I therefore I liked this much better with the orange juice than I suspect I would have with either bourbon or rum. The spicing was lovely, and this drink was incredibly tasty. Many thanks to Sarah and Cindy for bringing all those mugs, to Brian for having been willing to loan his mugs, and to Eric for bringing the metal ladle.
