What Makes a Wonderful Breeder?

I think that caring and concern are what make a wonderful breeder.  Right from the first time I called inquiring about a puppy, I could tell my breeder loved her breed, her dogs and all the dogs she has ever bred.  My breeder is knowledgeable about her dogs, their blood lines, their health concerns and their behavior.  And I knew when I finally took my puppy home, I had made a friend for life.  She has been there, no matter how silly or stupid my questions must have seemed, she has glowed with pride right along side me when my pup has accomplished something noteworthy, and has laughed along with me at his antics.  Her dogs are raised in a loving home, with great care and attention to each and every puppy.  In two years my pup has needed nothing but routine vet checks, shots and neutering.  I know I wouldn't trade a great breeder for anything!!!

Sandi & Fantasy's Forever Night, FDCH (Zipper)

When I asked the Stickneys for a show dog, I laughed and told them I didn't want much, only the best.  I had never met these people and they most certainly didn't know me as I had not been involved in this breed long.  They became through the purchase of this dog, great friends that I've had the opportunity to visit a number of times in their home and enjoy their hospitality and their dogs.  They have been very supportive of my venture into dogs, and I could not ask for a better breeder to have.  They have helped guide me with the dogs, and encourage my decisions with added sage advice, but never forcing their opinions either.  The trust and friendship I have with these breeders is something I cherish, and I know that I will endeavour to pass on their ethics and extend the hand of friendship as I breed these dogs.  After seeing many breeders not be supportive and active in their puppy buyers, I am fortunate to have such people in my life, and hopefully there are more of them, than the other.

I have two Manchester Terriers at the moment.  One, the Toy, I bought from a breeder.  My Standard Manchester I bred myself.  I am active in showing my dogs in obedience and agility, and have had some measure of success in those pursuits.  Every time I showed I was able to write, call or e-mail Sadie's breeder to share my wins or my losses with a sympathetic ear.  I knew that Donna would always be interested in hearing what we were doing and how it was going, even if we were having almost insurmountable problems (and those periods did happen!).  I discovered that when I won something with Blossom, my home-bred Standard, I had no one to share with that really was interested.  Sure, lots of other people would listen, but no one person felt a real attachment to Blossom except ME!  Donna always was interested in Sadie's activities, and when I was pursuing Holistic veterinary care with Sadie, Donna became interested and ended up a true believer.  When Donna started using raw foods for her dogs, she was quick to inform me and eventually push me into that arena, also.  The breeder/owner bond can be mutually beneficial.  The day Sadie first showed in obedience at a National Specialty and won High In Trial, Donna was there, beaming with pride.  When Sadie finished her Utility title, Donna sent a photo and a brag to the national obedience newspaper, something I would never have done.  When Sadie achieved the Master Agility Champion title, Donna sent a photo and brag to the AKC Gazette and never even warned me.  She also spent a year making a beautiful needlepoint hanging of a Toy Manchester doing agility featuring Sadie's name and titles.  She never once doubted that Sadie and I would achieve our goal.  Donna was not only the breeder of my little dog, but over the years of our association she has become a good friend and confidante.  Having both my home-bred dog and a breeder's dog, I have to say that my enjoyment in activities was heightened by having a breeder to share them with.

Five months ago, I was lucky enough to call Betty Hodges (who with her husband, Darrell, and partner, Philip Shane, operates Rosewood Manchester Terriers) looking to buy a male puppy whom I could later breed to my female Manchester Terrier (I didn't even know she was a Toy at the time).  I had never shown and only had a notion that I'd breed a litter and sell/give the puppies to friends and family who constantly asked me how they could get "a dog like Percy" (my female).  Betty nicely grilled me on the phone and lured me out to her home in Riverside with my husband and my girl.  Based on our phone conversation, Betty had researched Percy's pedigree and was "ready" for us when we arrived.  Hours later, I had a new puppy (Pilot) and was the proud owner of two show dogs!  Betty spent hours discussing the importance of improving the bloodlines, soundness, and type.  Betty provided me with information on handling classes, feeding, risks of anesthesia, and other health concerns.  Most importantly, she had us sign a contract that explicitly spelled out the terms of the sale including a the fact that she would take the dog back for any reason at any time.

It was clear to me that the Hodges provided a warm, loving environment for their dogs.  I met not only Pilot's parents, but also dogs farther back in his pedigree like Sparkle (Ch. Golden Scoops Sparkle Plenty -- age 15) and Sly (Ch. Rosewood Sly Fox  -- age 13).  It's one thing to see a Hall of Fame dog like Sparkle in your dog's pedigree, it's quite another to see the spry old girl sleeping on the breeders bed. As a Toy Manchester Terrier breeder for more than 15 years, Betty has long term experience with her breeding program.  She's seen the results of many generations of selective breeding designed to improve the bloodlines.  Betty's dogs are also an integral part of her family.  The Hodges treat their dogs with dignity and respect, they spares no expense in their care, and they agonizes over placing them in proper homes.  Betty stays in touch with all her babies' new parents -- offering advice, support, and an occasional scolding.  I've met individuals who bought pet quality dogs 10 years ago who still bring them by to dog shows to visit with Betty and Darrell.  Darrell spends hours with the puppies playing with and socializing them.  I only have to say the word "Darrell" and Pilot goes into a frenzy of barking and tail wagging.

We recently paid the Hodges the highest compliment we could ever pay anyone. We boarded Percy and Pilot with them for two weeks while we were sailing and virtually unreachable.   We call the Hodges' friends.  I would highly recommend Rosewood Manchester Terriers to anyone who wants a quality Toy Manchester Terrier.  Just make sure you're willing to provide a home equally as warm and loving as the Hodges'.

Breeders Speak Out!

We have bred, shown and raised TMT's for 4 years now, but before that have owned, shown and bred other terriers for 14 years. You either love terriers, or you hate 'em. Personally, we really think they are pretty neat. We are careful when we place puppies with new families, telling potential buyers the good, the bad and the ugly. If they still wish a terrier after hearing the whole story...then they have what it takes to be good owners. We give money back guarantees with all our pups and make sure they are as healthy as we can possibly get them before they leave our  house. They also come with puppy packages, full of info on the breed, medical records, pedigree and tons of training literature. We are also just a call or email away for after purchase assistance. They are of course, registered with the Canadian Kennel Club and have already been wormed, given their first boosters and are microchipped for identification before they leave. All pups are well socialized to anything we can toss at them and are brave little souls, ready to face new challenges. We had our dogs tested with a DNA sample sent to a lab in Maryland, just in case there were any hidden health issues and they have all come back with flying colours. Not many people know what our breed is, but we can assure you, they are bundles of love and companionship, combined with entertainment and loyalty for many years of devotion.

Julie McClure, Julies Terriers

Health issues occur with varying degrees of frequency and severity from one breed to the next.  Hip Dysplasia, umbilical hernias and allergies, for example, are common conditions found in many breeds, while serious malformations and life-threatening diseases are found with less frequency.  The impact of a particular disorder on the health and longevity of the breed or breeds that it affects will depend on the nature and severity of that disorder.

With that said, buying a pedigreed pup or dog for the majority of people can be a nightmare.  Pedigreed dogs are subject to more than 300 genetically transmitted abnormalities, most of which are unpronounceable by the general John Q. Public, and undisclosed by the average seller. My thoughts are, by listing problems that affect our breed we can help make people aware of the problems they might be acquiring when buying a Manchester. We need to urge potential buyers to ask the seller if any of that dogs ancestors ever have been bothered by the afflictions listed for the breed.  We need to urge prospective buyers to ask who will be responsible for veterinary costs if a puppy is afflicted with a hereditary disease later in life.
