| What is computer memory and how it is different disk memory ? A computer system requires memory to store and retrieve instructions and data. Data is stored in memory by a process called Write and retrieved from the memory by a process called read. Memories are made up of storage locations in which data is stored. Each location is identified by an address. The amount of information that can be held in the memory is known as its capacity. The capacity of the memory is specified in bytes. The memory has address and each address can store one or more bytes of 8 bits of information. A computer system requires large amount of fast and efficient memories.There are varieties of storage devices including semi-conductor memories and magnetic memories. Primary or main memory is internal memory of computer system. It is a large memory which is fast but not as fast as internal process or memory. This memory is accessed directly by the processor. It is semi-conductor memory can not be accessed directly by a processor. First the information is transferred to the RAM (main memory) and only then the information can be accessed. Hard disk, floppy disk and CD ROM are example of secondary memory. How to make the internet connection ? You get Internet connection approval from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). That means that the ISP has allowed you to connect your computer to his main computer (called server) through your telephone line. You must first connect your computer to your telephone line. For this, your computer needs a device called modem. Whenever you dial the ISP's phone number, a telephone wire connection is established between your computer and the ISP's server. When you get an Internet connection approval from an ISP, you are a subscriber. An ISP may have thousands of subscribers. The subscribers can any time connect to the ISP's server through telephone lines. Each subscriber has been allotted a different address, e.g. [email protected]. When you type a message in your computer you can immediately forward it to any other subscriber's address (if you know his address). The message will almost immediately appear in the other subscriber's computer screen. This is called electronic mail. What is Hypertext Markup language (HTML) ? The worldwide web connects people to more than 100 million web pages from all over the globe connecting all kinds of information. HTML is using standard code for creating and for making web pages. HTML is text based markup language that all the web browsers are able to understand and intercept. HTML is way of representing text and linking the text to other kinds of information such as graphics, animation, sound and multimedia and allowing different kinds of data to be displayed together. HTML documents include both the text you see on a web page along with formatting tags and give browser instructions such as which words to display in bold where graphics should go and how tables should look. |

Web TV is a way, to access the internet through your TV. You do not need to own a computer and there is no software to load. All you need a television, a cable connection (or phoneline or satellite connection) and a web TV set up box (Internet terminal) and you are on the Internet with the web TV service you can explore the internet using your own television. All you have to do is to press buttoms of a remote control or infrared keyboard. Web TV provides fine and an easy way to access the Internet. Because of its simplicity even children can use it. Web TV is not a computer. You can not download programs and PC software because Web TV does not have a hard disk. The Internet top boxes for television is capable of receiving signals from satellite transmission or from cable connection. The cable connection is normally provided by manufacturer of set top boses. For satellite reception a 18" direct TV dish is required. What is desktop publishing? What is internet telephony ? In the beginning, the internet was used mainly to share data and communicate via e-mail. Recently the internet got better and faster and it became possible to send other kind of data including voice. This new world of telephony is known as internet telephony or online telephony or IP (Internet Protocol) telephony. It is cheaper and easier to communicate with persons and machines all over the globe. The IP telephony differs from the regular (PSTN) telephony because PSTN telephony uses a dedicated connection from one end to the other end and the quality is high. For Internet telephony there is no need of dedicated connection. The voice data is digitized, broken into packets and sent over an IP network. The packets are reassembled at the receiving end and heard as voice. The cost is very low than that of regular long distance calls. Different forms of Internet Telephony : (1) Net meeting or Netconference; (2) Netzphone; (3) Net phone-to-phone 1. The computer to computer voice talking is called netmeeting. 2. When you connect to the Internal �. Net2phone software, you can talk to your friend on his telephone in some other country. 3. In net phone-to-phone call you dial from regular telephone. This type of phone call is not possible in India. This service is possible only when your telephone company and the Internet Service Providers cooperate. |
