JAWAHAR LAL NEHRU
(1889-1964)

Jawahar Lal Nehru ,the father of Indira Gandhi was the first prime minister of India.
Jawaharlal Nehru had a wonderful childhood according to himself. He was a privileged child because he was born into an extremely wealthy family on November 14th, 1889. His family lived in a mansion in Allahbad, India. He had 1 sister named Sarup. Between 1902 and 1904 Jawaharlal was tutored by Ferdinand T. Brookes. While he was being tutored he showed a great love for science and English poetry. At age 16, (1905) he went to England and was educated at the Harrow school, one of England’s leading schools.
Jawaharlal Nehru had an exciting adult life. He entered Trinity College at the University of Cambridge at age 18 in 1907. He graduated in 1910. When Nehru was 23 or so he married a beautiful young woman named Kamala Kaul. They had one daughter named Indira. Jawaharlal joined the Indian National Congress in 1919. Between 1921 and 1945 Nehru was imprisoned 9 times for demanding independence from the British. Finally Jawaharlal became the first Prime Minister of independent India in 1947. During his Prime Minister years he supported the United Nations resolution on Korea. Nehru died in office on May 27th, 1964 in New Dehli, India.
We consider Jawaharlal a peacemaker because he fought nonviolently for independent India. In December of 1929, Nehru was elected president of the Indian National Congress. During the time Nehru was Prime Minister, he served as leader of the interim government of India. Also, Nehru launched the first of three five year plans to modernize the Indian economy. Jawaharlal Nehru died in New Dehli, India in 1964. He died while he was serving as Prime Minister of India. Nehru died of old age. Hundreds of people came to his funeral. He affected my life because he made me think more about other people. I think he affected the lives of other people in India because he helped them be free of the British.
