It was built in 1887. It was necessary 17 years to build it. All the material excep the the of the floor, is from Europe: France, England and Portugal. It is in new-classic style, considered one of the teathers with the best acustic in the world. All the external sidewalk was imported from Portugal and it is called " pedra de li�s" . This material was a mix of rubber in order to not disturb the performances inside the teather when the chariots were passing by.
It was inaugured with the performing of the opera La Gioconda by the Italian Pontielli. The responsible for the part of the project of the theather were Crispim do Amaral, a Brazilian and Dom�nico De Angelis from Italy. Both participated of the big company called "Comedie Fran�aise", a famous art school from France.
The great tenor Pl�cido Domingo was specially invited to the reinauguration and celebration fo the 100 years of the Opera House.
