WHA Announces Plans for WHA-Jr. | ||
World Hockey Association Press ReleaseMr. Peter Young, President of Hockey Operations for the World Hockey Association and Co-Founder of the WHA2, today announced plans for the formation of WHA-Jr.Phase One of the Major Junior Division of the WHA will include a proposed six or seven team league in Florida and Georgia. Other executives in the league�s formation include former Winnipeg Jets star Norm Beaudin, veteran hockey administrator Ron Cocquyt and Sarasota businessman Stuart Addison. WHA Commissioner Bobby Hull will act as an advisor for the league. WHA-Jr. will launch a 60 game schedule in November of 2004. Players will range in age from 16 to 20 with one exemption for an overage (21-year-old) player. Negotiations have begun for teams to play in two rinks in South Florida, Kendall Ice Arena in Miami, and Pines Ice Arena in Pembroke Pines. Other rinks hosting teams would include The Ice Factory in Kissimmee, J.P. Igloo in Ellenton, Skate World in Jacksonville, and the Tampa Bay Skating Academy in Oldsmar. Two cities in southern Georgia have also expressed an interest in icing teams for the inaugural season. Following the WHA winter meetings in Toronto December 9th and 10th WHA-Jr. will conduct meetings in Tampa in mid-January.
