World Hockey Association 2 Press Release

CELEBRATION, Fla. The World Hockey Association 2 (WHA2) concluded two days of league meetings Friday, August 1st. The meetings were highlighted by several rule changes, announcements of insurance and immigration partners as well as a league-wide audio and video broadcasting deal. The Board of Governors and alternates were appointed and board officials elected.

WHA2 Co-founder David Waronker was elected Chairman of the Board. Orlando Seals owner Ruth Waronker was voted in as President. WHA2 co-founder Peter Young was named Vice President. Controller Dennis Zakroff was named Treasurer. WHA2 Director of Communications and Media Relations, Monique Griffin, was elected Secretary.

Elected to the Board of Directors were a governor and alternate governor from each team.

Alabama Slammers: Taylor Hall (Gov), Kevin Simpson (Alt)

Jacksonville Barracudas: Larry Laviolette (Gov), Joe Musa (Alt)

Macon Trax: Joe Suk (Gov), Tommy Stewart (Alt)

Miami Manatees: Brian Klaus (Gov), Sam Girlya (Alt)

Orlando Seals: Ruth Waronker (Gov), David Baird (Alt)

The Lakeland Loggerheads appointed a governor and an alternate governor who will be announced next week.

The staff from each organization came well-prepared and we accomplished a lot. Waronker said. I was impressed by the creativity and forward thinking attitude of the attendees. I think hockey fans in all of our markets will be pleased with the product we put on the ice.

The WHA2 rules committee announced several important by-laws that will be applied to the upcoming season.

The league salary cap has been raised $200 a week from $6,400 to $6,600 per week.

Our coaches were unanimous in their belief that the moderate increase in the weekly salary cap will translate into one more quality player on each roster. Young said.

Each team will be allowed six veterans per team. A veteran is defined as having 300 or more of professional hockey experience.

The rules committee voted to eliminate the red line for two line passes.

We wanted to follow the lead of the World Hockey Association and their commissioner Bobby Hull. Young said. It is the Golden Jets opinion and that of many hockey fans that the neutral zone trap is ruining our game. Removing the red line will open up the game. For icing calls, the actual red line will remain on the ice.

For the 2003 2004 WHA2 season, the committee also voted to give the linesmen the authority to inform the referee regarding double minors for high sticking. The referee will have the discretion on the final call.

A regulation tie will result in a point for each team. A five minute three-on-three overtime session and a three man shootout will determine which team earns the extra point.

If a team incurs a penalty during three-on-three overtime, the opposition team will add a player for a four-on-three. If no goal is scored during the penalty, the teams will play four-on-four until the next stoppage of play.

The WHA2 also announced its partnership with Kraft Insurance for league wide player coverage, spectator liability coverage, and front office staff coverage.

Attorneys Heather Murphey of Naples, Fla. and Erik Schultz of Buffalo, NY, will act as the league immigration lawyers.

The WHA2 has also signed on with IRN.fm as the exclusive provider of audio broadcasts for Alabama, Jacksonville, Lakeland, Macon, and Orlando. Video broadcasts of the game will be available in Jacksonville, Lakeland, and Orlando on a pay-per-view basis.

Coaches from two WHA2 teams completed a blockbuster three for one trade late Friday. Details will be announced on Monday.

The WHA2 will ice six teams for the 2003 2004 season and play a 21 week, 60 game schedule. The Alabama Slammers, Jacksonville Barracudas, Lakeland Loggerheads, Macon Trax, Miami Manatees, Orlando Seals will open training camps with player physicals no later than October 25th. The first regular season games will be on Friday, November 7, 2003.
