Hockey stick - Don't get Checked!

Miami Manatees Press Release

MIAMI, Fla. - On Monday, July 28th Zac Boyer had the honor of being selected to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Marlins game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

It isnt widely known to most fans, but the length from pitchers mound to the home plate is the exact same distance as it is from the blueline to the hockey net. Boyer was familiar with all that space on the ice surface, but he soon found that space on the baseball diamond to be a different matter all together.

The big difference was being up on the mound in front of all those people in the stadium. My biggest fear was grounding it out. Boyer said. It felt like a big game scenario. I was in uncharted waters being up there.

Was I Nervous? Yeah! he said with a laugh.

Despite the nervousness, Boyer was led to the mound in front of the 10,472 fans that came out to see the Marlins under the threat of dark clouds. He dug in, calmly shaking off catcher Billy the Marlins call for a fastball.

Billy called for the knuckleball pitch. Boyer shook that one off as well. Billy insisted on the knuckleball again. Boyer glared as he shook his head no. Billy threw up his arms in disgust. Boyer nodded affirmative at that pitch signal.

He reared back, let loose a glorious arching pitch that rose high in the summer air, tearing apart the air with a small thunderclap, and went smack dab down the center of the plate into Billys grotesquely oversized glove. (This recap was highly dramatized for the readers enjoyment.)

As an aficionado of baseball, it was probably one of the best examples of 12 to 6 oclock curve that I have ever witnessed. Manatees assistant general manager Shawn Thorimbert, in attendance to witness the glory, said. It makes us proud to realize that we have such a multi-talented force behind the Manatee bench. Perhaps its best for everyone that he stays there.

It was a lot of fun and a great honor. I want to thank the Marlins for allowing me to do that, it was a great honor and a memory I will always cherish. Boyer said.
