SEHL denies rumors of merger | ||
From staff reports Huntsville Times South East Hockey League officials squashed rumors on Friday of a possible merger between the SEHL and World Hockey Association 2. The two leagues are in their first year and were created from the dissolution of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. There are four teams in the SEHL - Huntsville, Winston-Salem, Knoxville and Cape Fear (Fayetteville, N.C.). WHA2 has six teams - (Pelham) Alabama; Macon, Ga.; Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville and Lakeland, Fla. The SEHL was started by local businessman John Cherney in August with two teams from the ACHL (Knoxville and Cape Fear) and two new teams (Huntsville and Winston-Salem). Four former ACHL teams owned by Florida real estate developer David Waronker - Jacksonville, Macon, Miami and Lakeland - are original members of WHA2. Orlando and Alabama joined later. The SEHL released a statement Friday denying the rumors: "The SEHL would have no interest in a merger of any type with the WHA2 due to ideological differences." The differences, according to the statement, include: SEHL teams have tightly controlled operating budgets. The league's intent is to develop younger players by strictly adhering to a two veterans per team rule. There are no franchise fees to join the SEHL. League policy is established by a vote of a board of governors, with one governor from each team.
