Loggerheads Earn First Win of Season | ||
By JOHN BARKER Ledger Correspondent A well-disciplined Lakeland Loggerheads hockey team picked up the first win for the WHA 2 franchise handing the league leading Miami Manatees a 4-3 loss Friday night in Lakeland Center action before 1,229 fans. Jeff Glowa scored the game winner at 6:33 of the second period assisted by Christopher Affinati and Stephan Desjardins. Immediately following the win all the Lakeland (1-6-1) players went to center ice pounding their sticks and saluted all the attending fans for their continued support. "The players are very appreciative of the fans and they wanted to show that," said Loggerheads coach Rick Ladouceur. Things looked tough early in the opening period as Lakeland goalie Tyler Murray stopped three shots in the first 30 seconds of play. Lakeland held Miami (5-2-1) off the scoreboard until Eric Perricone scored a short handed goal during a Loggerhead power play to give the Manatees a 1-0 lead. Lakeland stormed back at 4:32 as Jeremy Vokes blasted a slap shot by Mark Gowan on a Loggerhead power play effort assisted by Joe Seroski and Desjardins tying the game at one apiece. The Loggerheads struck again with two more goals with another by Vokes at 12:24 assisted by Chris Migliore and Rob Miller and scored again 27 seconds later as Garrett Dionne lit the light once again assisted by Jim Callahan closing period one at 31 Lakeland. "It was a case of us just being overwhelmed early and then we ended up doing very well giving our goalie the support he needed," said Ladouceur. The second period was a stalwart performance by the Loggerheads, who were really on top of their game and held Miami at bay with some good passing and a strong puck control effort. "It was probably the best period of hockey we've played so far this season," said Ladouceur. The second period ended 3-1 Lakeland. Miami didn't die quickly scoring two third period goals. Oak Hewer scored at 3:52 assisted by Perricone and then Tom Perry scored at 10:17 assisted by Todd Nowicki and Kevin Swider making it 4-3 Lakeland. The Manatees pulled their goalie during the final minute of the third period, but were unable to score.
