ALL-STAR NOTEBOOK: It's not exactly All-Star break for most players | ||
By JASON SCHNEIDER and DAVID JOHNSON The Times-Union Orlando Seals All-Stars Mike Fournier, B.J. Stephens, Mark White and Brad Federenko and Macon Trax All-Stars Art Mnatsakanov, Steve Zoryk and David Deeves will have little time to reflect on their All-Star memories as Orlando and Macon play each other tonight in Orlando. The rest of the All-Stars don't have much more down time as Alabama, Lakeland, Miami and Macon play Thursday night. Jacksonville gets more of a break, not playing again until Friday night when the Barracudas play host to Alabama.
Strotting his stuffBrett Strott started out the WHA2 season as the Barracudas' assistant coach, and midway through the season he's still a coach but he's also now an All-Star.The 36-year-old-got into Tuesday night's All-Star game less than three minutes into the first period and got a great chance to score midway through the first period but couldn't get the puck past a sprawling David Goverde. Strot is filling in for Mike Whirll, who was called up by the Charlotte Checkers of the ECHL two weeks ago and has yet to return to the 'Cudas.
Eruzione eyes futureMike Eruzione, co-chairman of the league's board, said before the game that the WHA2 needs to build its reputation to continue to grow."I've seen where the players have played and where they've come from," said Eruzione, who played for the U.S. hockey team when it won the gold medal in the 1980 Olympics. "We need to continue to bring in young players. I want to see this [league] as its own professional league, but I also want it to become a developmental league. If a team like the Boston Bruins or Montreal Canadiens might like to send a player down, it would be nice to have that kind of relationship." Eruzione dropped the ceremonial first puck for the game.
Etc.The Barracudas wore their white road jerseys for the game despite being on a 10-game winning streak while wearing their home blues.Macon forward Steve Zoryk is third in the league in goals but spent most of the game on defense. Old habits die hard as Zoryk scored the first goal of the game and assisted on the second. Mascots from all six WHA2 teams attended the game.
