Cherney says his league will pick up teams if rival league fails

Are they or aren't they?

Will they or won't they?

The answer: Who knows?

The questions have to do with reports of supposed financial problems with World Hockey Association 2 and the South East Hockey League picking up some of the teams.

From David Waronker, founder of WHA2: "The story is that there is a league to run. The rumors are untrue. We are looking forward to our All-Star game (Jan. 27) and all the rest of the games this season ..."

From John Cherney, founder of the SEHL: "The whole league (WHA2) is having difficulties. If that should happen, we will pick up the teams ... they will be absorbed."

WHA2 has teams in the Birmingham suburb of Pelham; Macon, Ga.; Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville and Lakeland, Fla. The SEHL franchises are in Huntsville; Knoxville; Fayetteville, N.C.; and Winston-Salem, N.C.

Last week, the rumors got to a point where the SEHL issued a press release denying it had plans to merge with WHA2, citing several areas where the two leagues differ, including rosters and administration.

However, Cherney said if the SEHL absorbs teams, those teams would have to adhere to the SEHL's guidelines.

"They would have to play under our rules," he said.

Waronker denied a newspaper report speculating the WHA2 would fold after the All-Star game.

"There is absolutely no truth to the rumors about the demise of this league," Waronker told the Florida Times-Union on Monday. "We are on board and going forward.

"Are we perfect? No.

"But we are looking forward to finishing this season and having successful seasons in the future."

Waronker, who was looking at Huntsville for a franchise last summer, said the WHA2 would be expanding next season with a franchise in Asheville, N.C., and another team in a city he would not name.

In an appearance Wednesday on ESPN2's "Cold Pizza," Waronker spoke about the league's All-Star game next week and how some of its rules differ from those of the NHL and other minor leagues.

However, he didn't address the rumors surrounding the WHA2.
