The Miami Manatees won't hit double digits every night. So, in their first game since scoring 10 goals in their opener a week ago, they showcased goalkeeper Sean Weaver and a patient attack to beat the Lakeland Loggerheads 5-2 Friday night at Miami Arena.
The hockey victory in front of 750 fans moves the Manatees into a tie for first in the WHA2 standings with the Jacksonville Barracudas, who visit tonight.
Manatees center Ryan Kiley scored a pair of goals, including an empty-netter with 16 seconds left. Eric Perricone scored once to take the WHA2 points lead with seven, and Oak Hewer and Kevin Swider added one each.
With no red line -- allowing for two- and three-line passes -- defense has been at a minimum in the WHA2. Miami and Lakeland combined for 74 shots Friday but had a tough time beating Weaver and Loggerheads rookie Tyler Murray. Still, the pace was frantic as five shots beat the goalkeepers only to hit the post.
"People said there would be a lot of pushing and grabbing with no red line," Kiley said. "It is not going to be that way. When you get behind a guy here, there is no red line to stop you."
