WHA competition? | ||
By David J. Neal In September, I asked NHL chief legal officer Bill Daly did the league consider the new World Hockey Association or the WHA's minor league, the WHA-2, competition? Would the presence of either affect collective bargaining agreement negotiations? There was a long pause before the cellphone spoke, "No." Perhaps the memo didn't make the Panthers offices because the fax machine was turned off to save money. The Panthers fired Vanessa Rey-Fischel, administrative assistant to Panthers general managers and assistant general managers since 1997, and told her the reason was her husband, Mark Fischel, worked for the WHA-2's Miami Manatees. The first-year Manatees, the equivalent of a Double A baseball team, was the competition, according to the Panthers, the NHL team that has been in this market for over a decade. That's the same as an adult afraid of losing a spouse to a high school freshman.
