Three kids win writing awards | ||
The 2003-04 Junior Orange Bowl Festival continued Saturday with the Fifth Annual Creative Writing Contest Award Reception. The reception was held at the University Holiday Inn during the monthly meeting of the South Florida Writers Association, which sponsored the contest. The contest asked Miami-Dade eighth-graders to write an essay on "What is My Role in a Caring Community?" Essays went through three rounds of judging by members of the South Florida Writers Association in order to select the top three. The first-place winner was Kevin Mintz from Arvida Middle School. At the awards reception, Kevin read his essay to the audience before receiving his prizes, courtesy of the South Florida Writers Association, Borders Books, the Miami Art Museum, the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, and the Miami Manatees Hockey Team. The second-place finisher was Mollie Sussman from Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy. The third-place prize went to Brandi Fliegelman of Highland Oaks Middle School.
