Heather’s Story Chapter 1

My name is Heather. Or at least the name I will use to write this story, I can’t tell you my real name or even where I used to live when the events in this story takes place. But I will tell everything else that has happened when I started to find out everything about the Yeerks. Yeerk, that word used to have no meaning for me, I knew that something was going on in the town I lived in, but I never would have guessed what was really going on with just the little clues that I was picking up from the other people in town, which included my mother. See, I am a telepath, I read minds, and when my story starts I was getting feelings from more people than I usually do; My mother, the vice principal of my school, and later, many others.

A couple months after we had moved to the town I am now living in my mother started to spend more time at a club called the sharing, and she wasn’t home much. This meant that I was alone most of the time unless I went to my friend Celeste’s house, her family and her basically had adopted me as their own, Celeste had helped me when my mother and I had just moved to the town. I had been in a bad accident and lost all memory of who I was, even the basic things evaded me. She had taught me all of the basic things, my mother was so busy being the big shot lawyer that never even noticed when I wasn’t home, or that there were times I didn’t come home for weeks.

That changed after three years, she had forbidden me to leave the house except to go to school, even though she had the endless meetings at her work after hours. I found out one night when my grandmother had called asking for her that there were no meetings. That night had started out like any other; I was in my room on the Internet on the line that I had in my room and was talking to Celeste in a chat room. We were talking about going to another room to goof off and pick on some of the people in this aliens chat room when I heard the phone ring. I told Celeste I would be back and I ran out to get the Phone. “Hello?” “Heather, dear? Is that you? It’s your grandma,” she said, it sounded like she had been crying. “Yeah It’s me grandma, what’s going on? You sound upset.” “I really need to talk to your mother, is she home?” “No, she’s not, she is at a meeting at work. Do you want me to call her for you?” “I would appreciate that. It is urgent and I need to talk to her now.” “Okay grandma, I’ll tell her.” “Thank you, dear.” With that my grandma had hung up so I immediately called the office that my mom worked at. After a couple of rings the secretary picked up the phone. “Thank you for calling Johnson law firm. This is Katty, how may I direct your call?” I knew Katty, I had met her many times at some of the picnics the company had held since we moved here. “It’s me Heather, I need to get a hold of my mom.” “I’m sorry Heather, but your mother isn’t here, I’m the only one here, have been since 6 o’clock.” “Did my mother say where she could be reached?” “No, she just left with some of the others and they didn’t tell me where they were going.” “Thanks.” “Bye, I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help for you.” With that she hung up and I called grandma back to tell her that I couldn’t get a hold of my mother. “Hey, grandma?” “Yes, dear?” “I don’t know where my mom is. She isn’t at the office like she told me, I called and Katty doesn’t know where she went, just that she went with some of the people in the firm and that they didn’t tell her where they were going.” “Okay, tell your mother to call me right when she gets home, I really need to talk to her. Your grandfather is in the hospital again. He had another heart attack at work, and he is in critical condition.” “Oh, I’m sorry. I’ll make sure I tell mom to call you when she finally gets home.” “Thanks, I have to go and call your aunts and uncles to tell them. Talk to you later Heather.” My grandma hung and I went back to my room to tell Celeste what happened. “Hey Celeste, I’m back.” I typed on the computer when I got into my room.” “Hey welcome back, what took so long, you missed a funny conversation I had with someone that came into the room. You should scroll up and read it.” “I will in a second. That was my grandma, gramps had a heart attack and grandma wanted to talk to mom... so I called mom’s work, because she had said that she would be there after work. But when I called Katty said she left at six and haven’t come back, or even told her where she was going.” “Oh, where do you think she is?” Celeste typed. “I don’t know, Katty just said that she had gone with some of the guys from the firm, but she don’t know where they went.” “Hum... think she went to another Sharing meeting?” “I don’t know. Maybe, but you know how I feel about talking to anyone from that organization, they give me the creeps.” “Yeah, I know, same here. What are you going to do?” “I’ll just wait till she gets home.” “Okay, well, we still have some time, want to talk to the people in that alien chat, you know mess with their heads?” “Okay.” Celeste and I went into the chat and had some fun till about 9 o’clock, then we had to log off. I didn’t go strait to sleep, I waited till mom came home. I had to wait a long time and while I was waiting, I started to think about things. If mom was lying about where she was at night, what else is she lying about? Around 10 she finally came home. “What are you still doing up? You should be in bed.” Mom said the moment she entered the house. “Grandma called today, she really needs to talk to you, grandpa had a heart attack.” I told her starting to get up from the couch where I was sitting. “I’ll call her in a second. Is that all she wanted?” “Yeah.” Then I stopped for a second before asking the question that was on my mind all night. “Where were you tonight?” My mom gave the “dumb cow in the headlights” look then answered, “ I was at work at one of the stupid meetings the president of the firm set up.” She just looked at me strangely and then added. “Why do you want to know, what I do isn’t any of your business,” “I was just wonderin’, Katty said you left at six and hadn’t come back by the time I had called asking for you.” My mom’s face turned to an expression I never saw before, and she got up in my face really quick. “You called my work? What were you doing? Checking on me or something?” I backed up away from her, “No, Grandma wanted to talk to you right away and so I called your work to tell you to call her right away.” Mom just shook her head and pointed to the hallway leading to my room. “Go.” I gladly went to my room and laid down. My mother called my grandmother, but didn’t go straight to bed. So I read her mind, I wished I hadn‘t. “That nosey little brat! She asks too many questions. But I’ll think about what to do with her later.” I also heard the soft crying that I usually did when I read my mother’s mind lately. I soon went to bed that night thinking about how life had changed since we had moved to the town.

“After she got off the phone with grandma I read her mind, she was thinking about how she thought I was a nosey brat and that she would try to find some way to take care of me some way or another,”

It was next day; I found Celeste and told her everything that happened after I got off the net with her. Celeste listened quietly, with a thoughtful expression on her face the whole time I explained what had happened. “You sure you don’t want to stay at my house for a while? I don’t care if she does call the cops, you can’t live like this.” “Yeah I know. But what can I do? She knows where you live now, she could just come over and since she is a lawyer she could think of some charges to put up against you, Kitana, and James.” “I don’t care, and I don’t think that James or Kitana would either.” “You may not, but I do. I don’t want you guys to get in trouble because of me.” “Hey Celeste!!” We both turned around and there stood Marco. He came over to the table and sat down with his breakfast. “Hey wazup?” Marco asked. “Nothen’,” I told him, then looked over to Celeste, “Don’t tell him okay.” She nodded slightly enough that I could see it. “Okay I won’t” she replayed telepathically. She is also a telepath. “Hey Jake and I are planning to go to the mall tonight to play at the arcade, wanta come you two.” “Well I can’t come tonight, my mom and I are doing something tonight.” I told Marco. Celeste thought about it for a while then said. “Yeah I’ll go, I heard they got some new games in.” “Okay cool, I’ll tell Jake that you can make it. Maybe next time you can come with us Heather.” “Yeah next time.” I told him.
