Recently, there have been a spate of Indian sites targetting women. Here are a few choice ones which are both informative and interactive
Redforwomen Contact: Manuel Fernandes
"Work on your own terms," is the strapline
for this site, and who in the world would not want to do so? And
when you're a woman, you would certainly love a job which gave
you flexibility so that you can give due time to children and
home. The Redforwomen site specifically recognises this and
offers a host of opportunities for women, like working from home,
having part-time jobs or even taking up some entrepreneurship
where they can structure their time themselves. You need to
register first (hey! there is a male/female option here, so men
are not totally left out) before posting your resume, indicating
your requirements. Once you do so, the folks behind the Website
promise to search the perfect job for you. There are a number of
categories for which jobs are listed, like accessories, art and
craft, fashion, fitness, dance, cookery and retailing. So if you
want to get out of the 9 to 9 regime, Redforwomen might just be
your answer.
iCleo
Here's a site which is focussed on everything we
have traditionally associated with women: beauty, pregnancy,
child-care, cooking... There are tips on enhancing your 'twin
assets,' (their term, not mine) finding the right pair of
sunglasses, health and low calorie recipes. Oh yes, there is a
section on careers and some indicators on becoming an
entrepreneur and working flexi-time. In the careers section check
out the iCleo Job School which offers tips and tricks "to
help you shin up the greasy pole of corporate success." The
site has a panel of experts who are ready to answer your queries
whether they relate to increasing your child's appetite, removing
black-heads or doing justice to your promotion. As far as beauty
and fashion go, there are regular updates on the latest products,
so you can be assured that you're 'in' all the time.
Footforward
When
I accessed this site there was this interesting article right on
the front page which talked of how men and women use the net, and
what each was looking for. The archives too had some women-related
articles worth perusing. There is an entire section here devoted
to home business giving over 100 ideas for employing your time
gainfully right out of your house. Clicking on an idea (from the
A to Z listing) you can find out more on how you can build a
successful home-based business around it: The skills you need,
start-up tips, how to market it, and more. Other channels include
pregnancy, baby-care, baby names, beauty, health and fitness,
education and career. You can also get info on accommodation in
women's hostels, children's party organisers and cooking classes.
Rebelleworld
Now this is a site focussed on young ladies in the
age group of 14 to 24 years. Here, girls can get the latest info
on beauty, fashion, fitness, entertainment etc. Since these
youngsters get particularly hung up on screen heroes, there is a
section called Starscope where they can match their stars with
their favourite heartthrob. And if you are more down-to-earth,
you can match stars with your mate. Then there is the Jukebox,
where you can listen to music; Skin Deep, which answers beauty-related
questions; a weight calculator for checking those extra calories
and some interesting articles like 'Sex before marriage?' The
interactive section lets you send e-greetings, an e-kiss and
contact 'Cyber Cupid." The last is a fun game where you send
anonymous messages to someone you like and if he likes you back,
you get a match! Now all you need to do is light that fire.
Indiawomanpower
We found the most useful feature at this site to be
the online education courses. These are at the moment limited to
computer basics and Web designing but the number of courses could
well increase in the future. The Miss India training guru Mickey
Mehta figures prominently in the fitness section with an article
on him and his methods. There is a sizeable nutrition section,
which lays heavy emphasis on a vegetarian diet. Here you also get
calorie burner charts and calorie count for various foods. An
attractive page with twinkling stars is called sparklers and is
aimed at kids. (You can't think of women without thinking also of
kids, right?) Here you will find puzzles, magic, stories,
contests and quizzes. Other sections include entertainment, style,
health and heritage.
Soulkurry
This site, launched on the eve of Woman's day this
year, seems to be still very much under construction considering
the very jumbled home page we saw when we accessed it -- more
khichdi than kurry, we thought. SoulKurry offers woman-related
content like fashion, home, parenting, health, leisure and also
finance tips and info on art. There is something called the
Soulkurry dial which was not functional when we accessed the site,
but is meant for a user to identify who she is, what drives her
and what she is looking for. The dial would then direct her to
the relevnt content and links and put her in touch with experts
and mentors.
