Description

The discussion forums are set up to allow you to discuss the readings through electronic means. You've been assigned to a group: Aztec, Toltec, Zapotec, Olmec, Mayan or Chichimeca. Your discussion group forum changes with each module so make sure you know which group you're in before you sign in to the forum.

After you get into the forum, you will find a paragraph (4 or more sentences) about the readings which will prompt you to respond. This paragraph was posted by your group forum leader in response to the questions in the MAMS 219 Schedule. Read the prompt and respond with a paragraph (4 or more sentences) of your own thoughts on the subject. Make reference to reading assignments. Check the forum at least three times per week to read what other students in your group have to say and to post your further thoughts on the subject. Respond to the ongoing discussion, not just the previous posting.

Examples of discussion forum postings from a previous class may be found under MAMS220 Section 1 and Section 2 in Web Course in a Box. You can access them by using "guest" as your id and password.

A significant portion of your grade is based on your participation in the discussion forum.

Duties of Forum Leader

Each student will have a chance to lead a discussion forum group. The duties of the leader are as follows:
  • Keep track of attendance at group meetings. Have group members sign in on the attendance/postings form. If you're absent, make sure another group member collects the signatures for you and you attach the sheet to the form when you turn it in.
  • Each week post the discussion question and respond to it. Make sure your response is at least a paragraph long and prompts your group to respond.Determine what else you want to discuss about the readings in your group, i.e., What interested or surprised you about what you read? How do you feel about it? What do you want to know from the other students?
  • Keep track of the number of responses each group member makes throughout the unit. If a member is not keeping up with the required number of postings per week, send them an e-mail to remind them.(Don't use the forum for personal notes!)
  • Each week send me an e-mail listing students who were absent from group, arrived late, or didn't participate in the group's activity.
  • Each week, check the archives to see that each student has indeed posted (sometimes fingers slip and extra postings appear which are empty) and keep track on the form.
  • At the end of the 4 week unit, submit the form to me. You should print out the cover page from Web Course in a Box which shows the topics and names of people posting and attach it to the form.
