Mammas Dream
What you talkin' about boy?
"Mammas Dream thinks about you"
This is a biography of Mammas Dream, yet it's difficult to judge how it all came about, but it was probably in high school were Lance, Angus, and Whippz would jam every day for two years to earn one gig at Norwich Waterfront, after which they would never be the same. After they departed in June 2002, it was inevitable for the rock foundations they had already laid to build them back together!
April 26th, dinner time, Lance Daniels and Adam Whippz decided to get together for some rocking after Lance, becoming bored of his stale rock covers band (The New Tricks), and Whippz, constantly writing but unable to find musicians to share his ideas. They dubbed their project "Mammas Dream", after a cocktail they were drinking at the time.
A few practices later and they went in search of a band, funk bassist Joe Savoury jumped ship from the sinking New Tricks, and high school mate Lee Van got on the drumstool. Whippz mentioned the band to college friend Ryan Mason and he immediately grabbed a singer promotion. A couple of practices were done before Lance brought everyone down to a studio to record this new rock he and Whippz had been working on.
Local venues had each got a copy of the demo and the gigs came rolling in, but Lee Van had disapered for weeks, so a young Jordan Brooks was asked to get behind the drums for gigs in and around Norwich at such venues as; The Brickmakers, The Blueberry, The Bradford Arms, The Cricketers Rest, and The Ferryboat.
By late 2003 it should have been good times, but this is when it started falling apart. Joe became distant and unrelating to the band so he left. Ryan & Jordan were both unhappy at the lack of new material being added to the set and quickly left in search of something else. Angus was called up to fill in the bass until a replacement was found, and although he was gigging heavily in experimental grunge band Parney, he couldn't say no to a reunion. Ex-New Tricks drummer and high school friend Matthew 'Chewitt' Hewitt was also called to finish the remainder of booked shows.
The last booked venue was The Brickmakers on new years eve 2003/2004, and although Chewitt was unavaliable, he let the band borrow his drum kit and recommended Martin Chang for the gig. It was a make or break night for Lance & Whippz, but with Chang on drums, and Angus pleased with the groove between himself and Chang, it was a magical and energetic gig. After which Angus joined Mammas Dream for good and immediately asked Chang to get in on it too...he eventually agreed, to which Angus quit his two year stint with Parney less than a month later.
The final part to all this was a singer, because although Lance & Whippz could sing, they would rather play guitar. Long time follower of Mammas Dream, Calum Simpson, had dabbled in rock bands before but nothing seemed to stick. After Whippz heard Calum was a rock vocalist he asked, why doesn't he join? The rest of the band responded by saying, why not? He had seen enough gigs to know what they were trying to do, and he knew the lyrics well enough!
And that's the story so far; Lance, Angus, Whippz, Chang, & Calum setting out to achieve a new plateu of rock, bringing flavours from across the musical spectrum to make something truly magical in it's feeling and sound!
