~*HAVE YOU EVER*~

Have you ever looked in the mirror
And wished that the reflection was not yours...
Have you ever looked at your reflection
And wondered if it is all a dream?

Have you ever dreamed of a better place
Where you were free to be yourself...
Have you ever felt as though you could be yourself,
Only to realize that you were never accepted?

Have you ever wished to be accepted
And did whatever you could to gain adoration...
Have you ever been the object of someone's adoration,
Only to soon be rejected once more?

Have you ever feared rejection
And built up a wall to surround and protect you...
Have you ever had someone to break through your wall,
Only to break your heart apart and hurt you?

Have you ever had your heart broken
And swore you would never love again...
Have you ever decided to start loving someone,
Even though you were afraid to be loved?

Have you ever been afraid to be loved,
Yet you decide to let down your guard...
Have you ever been caught off guard
And absolutely swept off your feet?

Have you ever been swept off your feet
And forgotten what it was like to be in pain...
Have you ever stopped and remembered the pain
And wondered how soon it would return again?

Have you ever wondered when the pain would return
And the fear begins to consume your every thought...
Have you ever had so much fear consume you,
That you distanced yourself from your love?

Have you ever tried to distance yourself from your love,
Only to realize that you care too much already...
Have you ever cared so much for someone
That you're willing to give all of your heart to them?

Have you ever given all of your heart to someone
And felt as though you've never been happier...
Have you ever felt so happy in love
That you swear to never let your love go?

Have you ever sworn to never let your love go
And to always be the one who cares...
Have you ever decided that you no longer care about the pain,
Because you're in love...

And right now...there is no pain...

Anyone who has ever been hurt while in love, I feel, can relate to this poem. I wrote it after the end of a relationship, and the beginnings of a new romance. The point at which you let your guard down, and give yourself freely to your lover...it's such bliss. Yet, it can also be very scary, painful, and difficult to do.

I used redundancy in this poem, to allow for one thought to easily merge with the next. I end every thought with one feeling, and start the next thought with that same feeling, continuing through to the end of the poem, where an "enlightenment" is reached. I think it gives a nice flow to the poem...and reinforces each feeling expressed.
