VERTEX

 

The Vertex is an angle, much like the Ascendant and the Midheaven. It is calculated using different circles and arcs, and I won't get into the calculations here (and do I hear a collective sigh of relief?). It's enough to say that the Vertex (and it's opposite point, the Anti-Vertex) use the same types of calculations as the Ascendant/Descendant axis.

The Vertex is usually found near the Descendant, although depending on the time and location of birth, it can be anywhere from the 5th house to the 9th house (or beyond, although I've never seen a chart where the Vertex fell in either the 4th or 10th house). As to how to interpret the Vertex, well that's a matter that's open to a great deal of debate.

As you have probably noticed, there isn't a lot of information on the Vertex; some astrologers use it religiously, others either ignore it or don't even know what it is in the first place. For the record, the Vertex falls in the category of "astrological extras." It's not necessary to use or interpret the Vertex in order to do natal chart interpretation, transits, etc., although it can provide additional information.

I'm still at a point where I'm only observing the Vertex in charts; I haven't really decided how to interpret it, although I have noticed that it is definitely an active point in the chart. What I can share are some thoughts, and theories that I've heard and toyed with, and encourage you to go from there with your understanding of the Vertex.

One of the more popular interpretations of the Vertex is that it operates as a sort of an "unconscious descendant". In other words, the Vertex may show what we unconsciously look for in a partner, and the shadow-side of ourselves that we project onto others. (By contrast, the Descendant (the sign opposite the Ascendant) shows what we consciously look for in a partner.)

The Vertex is also thought to be a very "fated" point in the chart, and many astrologers who specialize in "karmic" type readings focus on the Vertex. I have observed that often when we meet someone that we feel we were "destined" to meet, as it were, that there is often a great deal of activity around the Vertex, either by transit, or more often through synastry (comparing the two charts). We may tend to attract our most important teachers through our Vertex. We may also tend to attract people with whom we have unfinished business from past lives through the Vertex as well.

I've heard that one astrologer (and his name, regrettably, escapes me) who looks at the Vertex as a point where we tend to explode; when pressure, tension and stress build up in our lives, the Vertex is where we blow off the steam. I tend to agree with this approach as well, particularly since I've seen the Vertex as being quite active in a number of charts that I've had to work with that related to explosions and fires - both in the event chart, and in the chart of the person responsible.

I do have a few things that I can share about the Vertex that I'm very sure of. First of all, the Vertex is an Angle: it is not a physical body, and therefore it can only receive aspects (in the same way as the Ascendant, Midheaven and the Moon's Nodes do not make aspects.) Mars trine the Vertex will influence the Vertex, but not Mars. Second of all, because the Vertex is a "minor" angle, as it were, I personally use no more than a 2 degree orb when considering transits and aspects to the Vertex.
