Titcomb Basin from Elkhart Park Trailhead
July 2001

These are some pictures from me and Kate's first trip to the Wind River Range together, and my first trip to the Titcomb Basin.  I first heard about this area from Phil and wanted to see the glaciers myself and maybe even try to climb Gannett Peak.  We only spent 2 nights in the backcountry since I was concerned about missing work, and were thus severely limited with what we could do in that time.  Just in order to get in there and see what we did in 3 days required over 20 miles of backpacking on the last day.

Ellingwood Peak (aka The Harrower) on the trail to Indian Pass.  Colorado also has an Ellingwood Peak, as well as an Ellingwood Arete (Crestone Needle) and an Ellingwood Ridge (La Plata Peak)
Island Lake and Fremont Peak from our campsite

Me and Kate at "Photographer's Point" on the trail .  In the background are the high peaks of the divide.
Upper Titcomb Basin

Knife Point Mountain and Bull Glacier from Indian pass.  Here is where we tried to climb Fremont Peak on the steep ice on the east face, but were turned back since we had no ice gear. Mistake Lake in the Titcomb Basin.  This lake was stocked with with fish mistakenly by Finis Mitchell (an early Wind River Range enthousiast), although I have a hard time understanding how you could pack fish 15 miles into the wilderness and release them by mistake
