The American Control Conference was in Anchorage in May 2002, and allowed me to visit the state briefly. This early in the year much of the land was covered in about 2 feet of rotten snow. For this reason I spent quite a bit of time just driving around like a tourist, although I was able to go on a few hikes in the Chugach Mountains and Denali and a backpack trip along the coast. Here are a few of the pictures from some of the backcountry stuff I did, as well as some roadside tourist pictures.

I'll have to identify, organize, and describe this land that seems to rise up out of the primeval chaos; and I have the naïve presumption to believe I'll be able to make it a part of my personal geography.
