Luke Madigan, it is believed, came to the US between 1848-1851, to the port of Baltimore, which was a landing place for immigrants, and many of them stayed in Baltimore or went to Washington, DC. Luke was married to Elizabeth Considine on July 21, 1853 under the name of Madigan, in Washington, DC, witnessed by Mathias Breen and Mary Finn. Luke and Elizabeth were land owners in Washington, DC as well as in Cumberland, MD and Sinclairsville, WV.
Luke joined the Civil War in 1861. He belonged to Co E, 2nd. Regiment, Maryland Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade (www.itd.rps.gov/cwss/soldiers). He re-enlisted in Co A in February 1864 and was discharged May 29, 1865.
When Luke and Elizabeth came to Cumberland, MD from Washington, DC, they already had two children, first Anna, then James Thomas, and later Charles. They bought land on the west side of Cumberland in September 1874, which is 210 Paca Street and in November of the same year, bought land in Sinclairsville, WV, which is now Ridgeley (Lots 11, 25, and 26-29). By then James Thomas was married to Lenore F. Buckley, and they were also buying lots in Sinclairsville. Deed records show that on May 26, 1887 James bought from John K. Shaw Lot 22, where Thomas Stephen (Jean's Grandfather) was born. Charles married a Rachel Hite (or Kite). September 24, 1898, a year after Luke died, Elizabeth sold lot 25 to Lenore Mulligan. I found that James and Lenore sold the right of way to the railroad, thus, their house had to be moved from the original location which was across the tracks from where it now stands. All the land that was owned by the Mulligan's was centered around where the railroad and the subway are now. The Mulligan House still stands at the corner of Blocker and (what else!) Mulligan Street!
Luke had a brother, James, who also used the Paca Street address, when he bought cemetary lots at St. Patricks Cemetery. He was married to a Margaret Breen and had seven children, but when he died in St. Paul, MN he was brought back and buried with Luke, Elizabeth and two children.
Luke also had a sister, Mary, who married a Patrick Kean from Cumberland. When she married, she used the name Madigan.
So, what's with the name change?...
Madigan was the family name when they came to the United States from County Clare, Ireland. Luke and Elizabeth were married using the name Madigan/Maddigan It was later changed to Mulligan by the time Luke went in to the Civil War.
Why is anyone's guess!
