"Stephanie's Stage" By Mark Dwyer
The Newfoundland Herald, June 18-June 24, 2001
"Brennan to compete in Miss Teen Millennium Contest"

Who says it doesn't pay to finish second? For Stephanie Brennan, finishing runner-up at the 2001 Miss Teen Newfoundland & Labrador Pageant has presented her with the trip of a lifetime.

The outgoing 17 year-old, who lost the prestigious crown to Corner Brook's Natalie Langor, will represent the province at the Miss Teen Millennium pageant July 18-23 in Edmonton.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, a chance for me to meet people from all over the world" said Brennan. "I'm in shock. I can't believe I have this amazing opportunity."

Contestants must be 17 or younger to participate in the international event. Langor, 18, is too old, meaning her first runner-up, Brennan, serves as her replacement. Langor, nevertheless, will represent the province at the Miss Millennium Pageant that same weekend.

"Pageants have made me a better person. I have so much more confidence in myself," said Brennan, who has participated in three provincial teen pageants, finishing first runner-up in 2000 and 2001. "Right now I feel like I can accomplish anything."

The honours student has been a member of the school council since Grade 7 and has been public speaking competitively throughout grade school.

"I'm comfortable now talking in front of people," she said, "I can talk in front of 1,000 people just like I'm talking to my friends. Public speaking has helped me tremendously."

She's also heavily involved in Junior Achievers, and has been a long-time volunteer with the Janeway Children's Hospital.

"Between work, school-work and volunteering, I'm always doing something," said Brennan., whose company, Stayin Alive, was recently named Junior Achievers Company of the Year. Brennan hopes to pursue a journalism degree after high school.

"I just want to be the best representative I can be and to make the province proud. I've learned something new from every pageant I've participated in, and I want this one to be a great learning experience too."
