| Natalie Langor's Crowning Achievement The Newfoundland Herald By Lesley Doyle May 7-14, 2001 Cover Story: Beauty, charm and talent are all wrapped up in one teenage package. That's the first impression given by Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador Natalie Langor. That first impression isn't deceiving: she's the real thing. After meeting Langor recently, it's easy to see how she captivated the judges and won the title for 2001. The bright 18 year-old is nothing short of remarkable. Langor, a native of Corner Brook, has quite the list of accomplishments. She is an honour roll student, a runner-up in the 2000 Ambassador Contest, a member of her school council and has been named the most spirited student at her high school, Herdman Collegiate. She has taken a variety of dance training including ballet, tap, jazz, modern, ballroom, Latin and swing. She is also a trained vocalist and plays the flute in her school's symphony. It is Langor's experiences that she attributes to her recent success. "I feel that to become a well-rounded person you have to take opportunities and continually want to learn," says Langor. The Miss Teen Pageant was one of those learning experiences, an experience Langor says she'll never forget. "When they announced my name I was speechless. The feeling was so overwhelming and exciting," says Langor with a smile. "In fact, the whole weekend was wonderful. I got to meet so many new people." A first-time pageant contestant, Langor became involved after seeing an advertisement in The Newfoundland Herald. With more that 188 applications, the girls were narrowed down to 36 lucky ladies. Langor says when she received her letter notifying her she was contestant number six, she really didn't know what to expect. "When I was little I used to watch the Miss Universe pageants on television and they seemed to be based on looks alone so I wasn't certain what to expect from the Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador Pageant," she says. "When I received the information, I realized there was so much more to it than beauty. You are judged on academics, fitness, individual interviews, personality and poise." It was Langor's overall disposition that made her the ideal candidate for the crown and has sent her on a whirlwind these past two months. "I don't think it has set in yet. I still can't believe that I won," says Langor. While she is still reeling from the February 25 pageant, she says she is ready to accept her role as Miss Teen and takes her new title very seriously. The first-ever Miss Teen from Western Newfoundland Langor has received an outpouring of attention in her hometown. In fact the day she arrived home she was welcomed by a huge motorcade, complete with police escorts, a limousine, media and all her family and friends. "When we pulled up all I could see was flashing lights and people everywhere, it was just amazing. "The whole city has been so supportive I have received so many cards and congratulations from everyone. It's really a great feeling to know that people are proud of you," says Langor. Two of those proud people are Langor's parents - Darlene and George. The couple has nothing but pride and admiration for their only child. "We couldn't be prouder," says Langor's mother Darlene. "She just continues to amaze us." And how does Langor feel about being an only child? "I think the fact I don't have any brothers or sisters has made me a more independent person," she says thoughtfully. "I am very lucky to have my parents' they have done so much for me. They have always supported me in everything I've done and I know they always will." Now in her graduating year of high school, Langor has many dreams for her future. The out-going teen has set her goals on one day becoming a neuro or plastic surgeon. She had hoped to attend York University after graduation to do a combined dance and kinesiology (study of human movement) degree, but those plans have been put on the back burner for the duration of her reign. "Mt parents and I decided that I would attend Memorial next year so I could enjoy being Miss Teen, but I haven't given up on my dreams, perhaps the following year I will go away to study medicine," she says. Langor's willingness to learn is none of the many qualities admired by Isabelle Fry and Kathy Dicks, the co-directors of the annual pageant. "She is just an outstanding individual," says Fry with pride. "Natalie has a way of lighting up a room. Along with her kindness, she is very articulate and professional in everything she does." And Dicks couldn't agree more. "Natalie was a superb choice for this year's Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador. I am quite confident she will do an excellent job in representing the province," says Dicks. With the admiration and faith of many to support her, Langor is sure to have a successful reign not to mention a busy one. Over the next year, Miss Teen's schedule will be tight pressed between traveling, appearances and special events, but Langor couldn't be happier. "I'm looking forward to traveling all over the province and meeting lots of new people," says Langor. "This is truly an exciting time for me and I want to see and do as much as I can over the next year."
