Haven of Hope An initiative of Every Child Ministries for abandoned & orphaned children in Ghana

Maa Abena, "the girl born on Tuesday", is now thriving at Haven of Hope, after being rescued from the streets. Her mother left her with another street woman. "Take care of my kid for a bit. I'll be right back," she said, tossing the woman a few coins. Days went by and the mother never returned. The coins ran out, and the street woman stopped feeding Abena. Annoyed that she was still around, she ignored the crying baby as much as possible. Felicia, one of Every Child Ministries' street workers was alert to the situation. When she asked about the child, the woman threw her at Felicia. Felicia worked with Ghana's Social Welfare Dept. to find the mother. She refused to take the child, but we were thrilled to offer her a home at Haven of Hope. Haven of Hope exists for children just like her. Abena was malnourished and did not walk when she came to Haven of Hope at about 18 months old. She jjust completed a year in the Nursery class at Haven Academy, the school associated with the Haven of Hope Home. During the year-end program, Abena was the star of the show as she performed cultural dances with other students.

Haven of Hope is a children's home and orphanage in Ghana West Africa. Haven of Hope provides a safe, loving home-like environment for children who have been orphaned, abandoned, enslaved, or subjected to other debilitating and desperate situations. Haven of Hope exists to give these children an opportunity to find hope, healing, care, and appropriate education, to enable them to become contributing members of society as adults. Children live at Haven of Hope through high school or the highest level of education they are capable of achieving. Our motivation for serving children comes from our Christian faith, but we receive and serve any child in need.

Chris' mother died in slavery as a trokosi trying to atone for the misdeeds of a relative in a traditional shrine. His father, the priest, had thirty some "wives" and hundreds of children. The shrine freed his slaves in 2004, but it was already too late for Chris. In traditional custom the woman is solely responsible for any children she bears as a result of sexual services she is forced to perform for the priest. The mother was dead, Chris had nowhere to go. He was welcomed at Haven of Hope and has been doing well. He is well-liked by the other children and excels in his schoolwork at Haven of Hope
Mary came to Haven of Hope because her street mother did not want her. This rejection caused Mary a lot of pain so that she was very angry and uncooperative at times. The Haven staff just kept loving and encouraging her, while enforcing appropriate boundaries.. In the past year she has made great strides and has begun to participate more with the other children. We are beginning to see a smile on Mary's face at last!
