Underline and Color Your Hyper Links Never underline anything that is not a link in your web site. Laurie, Harper and Chaplin explain that users know or expect that if a word or series of words are underlined then they are a link. So imagine ones confused look when they click a link and there is nothing. Links are underlined and if you underline normal text, how can anyone tell if it’s a link or not, asks Chaplin. And Harper goes on by adding that users are in a hurry and our eyes only pick up certain things, one of those is underlined text meaning a link. Harper gave a good example of why links need to be underlined and colored. “Thanks for becoming a member of our site. The details of your account have been mailed to http://[email protected]/. To return to our site please click here. If you would like to recommend our site to someone else you know, then please click here.” Harper noted that when most people read this they didn’t notice any links, but there are actually two sites. Each click here was a link but because there were not underlined or colored the user wasn’t aware of the link or the mind didn’t register the click here as a link. By simply underlining and using color it becomes easier for the user to identify. “Thanks for becoming a member of our site. The details of your account have been mailed to http://[email protected]/. To return to our site please click here. If you would like to recommend our site to someone else you know, then please click here.” There is no mistake now that the underlined and colored text is now a link.
