Milling Soap

Description: Scheduled
at the beginning of the day so the student can pick up their bar of
soap at the end of the day. The teacher is going to have some
lavender on
hand for the soap and will look into some other
additives. We will be grating the soap, then melting, then
adding things to it and then
pouring into a mold. The soap
needs to cool/set up for a couple of hours before removal from the
mold.

living in the 14th century, what coins would you have had in your
purse or strong box? How would your rank and station in
medieval society influence your purchasing power? How much
would daily items cost? This class will feature a brief
examination of the social structure, wages, prices and relative
values of the coins a medieval individual living in the 14th century
might possess. Discover if you could really buy that item or only
dream.

Beginning Woodcarving

very basic beggining class. We will discuss the woods to try to use,
tools you will need, sharpening the tools, sources of wood and
tools,
different carving styles, and safety. Bring any tools you

Viking Woodcarving Techniques

Description: This class
will go over the various styles of Viking Art from the Viking Age.
There will be a hand out with examples of the various styles and a
discussion of the examples. We will also discuss the various items
that the Viking Age Scandanavians decorated with carvings. This
class is aimed at woodcarvers of all levels, but can also be used by
stonecarvers and painters. There will not be any actual carving in
this class, but discussion of techniques will take place. No cost to
students. Class limit 30

out of breath while singing? Want to have a stronger and louder
performance without straining your voice? Lose your voice after
heralding all day? Then come learn the basics of diaphramatic
breathing, a way of supporting sound production without straining
the vocal cords. This is a hands-on class, so be prepared to perform
in front of your classmates. Pieces will be provided for practice.
$1 fee for handout.

Skaldic Poetry

Description: This class
will examine the metrical and decorative features of skaldic poetry
(using the common drottkvaett stanza), with examples in Old Norse
and English. Second half of the class will be a lab after which (we
hope) each student will go home with a finished stanza.

Pysanki eggs
Teacher: Mistress Isobel
Description: Pysanky
is the Ukrainian art of decorating egg using a wax resist process.
This method of decorating eggs is thousands of years old and has
been handed down from generation to generation. Pysanky were often
given as gifts and had designs with symbolic significance. Intricate
patterns are drawn on the egg with melted beeswax using a
funnel-shaped tool called a kistka. The egg is then dipped in a dye.
Only the unwaxed areas are dyed. More design is added in the dyed
color and again the egg is dipped in a darker dye. This process is
repeated in darker and darker shades until the design is complete.
The wax is then melted and wiped off the egg to expose the completed
pattern.

A beginning approach to Gold work
Teacher: HL Anne Harper
Description:Using modern
threads, different techniques will be taught concerning the glorious
beauty of this ancient art. Please bring normal sewing tools
(scissors, needles, and wax) and 7-9 inch stretcher bars preferably.
A strong 9 inch hoop will be used temporarily.
