Author : George Eliot

Title : Silias Marner

Silias Marner, undoubtedly one of the most heart-touching novels of the 19th century, was written by Mary Ann, or George Eliot, which was the name she assumed in the literary world. The tale of the weaver of Raveloe is told with utmost simplicity. It expresses, with a high degree of creativity and innovation, the ultimate victory of the truth against the false. Silias Marner, an unfortunate victim of injustice, does nothing, however to relieve his situation, and is therefore projected as symbol of perseverance and patience. Eliot shows admirable skill in bringing out the human emotions which capture the heart of a man broken thus by the storms of fate. The narrative does not move too fast, it allows the reader to understand well the country life & style that she so skillfully describes, and have a deep insight into each of the characters she makes a part of it. The weaver finds his lost happiness in the charming child, Dolly. Paternal emotions are hardly better described. Resigning to the will of the almighty, after sixteen years, Marner finally gets the happiness due to him. The ending is most satisfactory, and leaves a pleasant taste, after the melancholy feeling that is predominant in the rest of this novel. The tender feelings of this novel appeals to readers of all kinds, and carved in simplicity, it does justice to the art of writing. The younger readers may like to begin with an abridged version, however, the since the original is both easy to comprehend and identify, there is every reason for it to be recommended to every admirer of literature.
