AL NEWMAN

is hereby inducted into the

Minnesota Assembly of Mediocre Athletes Hall of Fame

on this 29th day of February, 1996

"Big Al" was a light-hitting utility-man with capable defensive ability. Although he never hit a home run and struggled to hit his weight, Al found himself as a role player on both of the Twins' championship teams in the 1987 and 1991 seasons. Capable of hitting equally poorly from either side of the plate, Al's mundane but versatile abilities made him an asset to the Twins for five special seasons.

Biography

Highlights:
Al played on both the 1987 and 1991 Championship teams.
Al led the Twins in stolen bases in 1989.
In 1990, led American League second baseman in fielding (.993) and was named league's Best Utility Player in Toronto Star's manager's poll.
Turned a key 1st-inning double-play against second-place Kansas City in the last home game of 1987, clinching a share of the division title for the Twins.

Lowlights:
Al never hit a Homerun as a Twin.
.191 average in 1991, and a career .231 average as a Twin.

Mediumlights:
Al was an integral part of baseball history when he helped turn 2 triple-plays in the same game for the first time in Major League history.
Al is #15 on the Twins' all-time single-season caught-stealing list
In 1992, LAl led Southern League second baseman in games, putouts, total chances and doubleplays, was tied for lead in assists, and set a club record for stolen bases.

Personal:
Al is currently the Twins' 3rd base coach.
Attended San Diego State, where majored in accounting and also played running back.
Daughters Kimberly (1/26/87) and Taylor (12/16/89)
Dedicates his time in support of Minnesota Future Farmers of America, is spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Public Saftey's "Buckle Up, Drive at Safe Speeds, and Don't Drink and Drive" PSA campaigns and the "Minnesota Twins/3M Totally Awesome Coaches Award" program recognizing outstanding youth sports coaches in Minnesota.
