FLEMING: A Fleming is any native of Flanders, so those who bore the name in Ireland will not necessarily have a common ancestor. The most notable Irish Fleming family established itself in Co. Meath in the wake of the Anglo-Norman invasion and the Flemings, Lords of Slane, had their stronghold at that place. Fleming families in Co. Cork may descend from much later settlers and in Ulster, where there is the heaviest distribution of Fleming families in Ireland, most will have come from Scotland at the time of the Plantation of Ulster in the 17th century, being descended themselves from settlers from Flanders who had previously found a new home on the border of Scotland at the end of the 12th century.
