David, Davitt: Dauid clericus 1150-60 DC (L); Davit Burre 1278 RH (C); Thomas Davit 1275 RH (Nf); Robert David 1276 RH (Lei). Hebrew David 'darling, friend', a name common in both England and Scotland from the 12th centrury and in Wales much earlier. (7)
DAVIS or DAVIES - This extremely common Welsh patronymic surname Davis or Davies (deriving from David) is found in Ireland where it was brought by settlers, in all four provinces but predominatly in Leinster and in Ulster, a heavy distribution of the name being remarkable in the east coast counties of Dublin and Antrim. It seems generally not to have been confused with any native Irish names although an instance of such was noted in the last century by the Registrar of Births who reported the use of Davis in Dungannon Union, Co. Tyrone, interchangeably with McDaid which derives from Mac Daibhaid (Mac David) which is more usually Davit or Devitt (q.v.). The surname Davis was also assumed by descendants of a branch of the McMurroughs which was distinguished by the name MacDavie Mor. (5)
