CULLEN: This name ranks among the hundred commonest in Ireland. Most Cullen familes will descend from the sept Cuilinnj which held Glencullen in the south of Co. Dublin on the border of Co. Wicklow whence some moved south in the late medieval period and established themselves in Co. Wexford where two townlands named Cullenstown commemorate their presence, one in the barony of Bargy and the other in the adjacent barony of Shelmalier West. Several hundred Cullen families now reside in Dublin while Co. Wexford, Co. Kildare and Co. Wicklow can count the largest number of the hundreds of Cullen families living in the rest of the country. Some who bear this name may derive from less prominent septs with similar names, the Cuilannin sept in Co. of Leitrim, and an Cuileannin sept in Co. Donegal whose descendants adopted Cullen in lieu of Cullinan as their surname. (5)
