COLES is a surname somethimes used as a first name.
The name Cole seems to have been a very old nickname for someone who was very swarthy or even black.
It could also represent the occupational name for a charcoal maker. The word comes from the Old English col, which was the word for charcoal.
Another possible source is a short form of Colin, which itself is a short form of Nicholas.
Lastly is could be an anglicised form of the Scots, and Irish name Mac Cool, which comes from Mac Gille or Mac Giolla meaning son of the servant.
The Americans seemed to have liked the name . Perhaps the two most famous Americans with this given name were Cole Younger a member of the Jesse James gang of outlaws and the much nicer Cole Porter, the composer of so many beautiful popular songs and plays.
There were three Coles with the First Fleet. Two of them were name Elizabeth; one was only nine-teen. Bnoth married. William Cole worked on Norfolk Island from which he tried to escape but was caught and hauled back.
